Radish Earrings
Prologue
Curious, the things that can happen in a day. Looking back on her day, nothing seemed real, from the funeral to the...thing. Luna sat alone on her sheetless bed in the girls' dormoritory - her roommates were still at the feast. Not that they would be talking with her where they there, they usually stuck to avoiding her, which she was perfectly okay with. Almost.
It seemed a tad strange that she was feeling, well, happy on a day everything should be sad, but here she was, alone on her bed, her trunk packed, staring absently at The Quibbler, and smiling. Very strange, indeed. Of course, Luna knew she could always find some reason to smile - she always had - but this one actually seemed good, like a real, smile-worthy reason. And even more astonishing, it came in the form of a boy. A living, breathing boy who showed genuine signs of liking her. It was only simple things like sitting by her during break and helping her carry books from one class to another (although dropping a very good many of them). He had even helped her study for her OWLs that year, as he had taken them the year before. Luna was almost positive a Zomback hadn't brainwashed him, it had only happened to her, herself, once before, but she knew the symptoms well enough to decide he hadn't been under their influence. Also, Luna could be fairly sure she didn't have much, if any, competition. But it all seemed too good to be true - things like this didn't happen to her.
Luna Lovegood had spent five full years at Hogwarts keeping mostly to herself, scanning The Quibbler, her father's magazine, ignoring people's snide remarks, and reading. In particular, she read about people like herself, only they all changed, eventually falling in love and making loads of friends. Needless to say, they were all Muggle books. So now was her chance. For some reason she had stayed in her room all night, packing, cleaning, whatever. Anything to avoid the train of thought that was now rushing through her with a scary tone of finality. Luna felt troubled, something she usually chose to avoid by blocking things out. But the Hogwarts Express was coming tomorrow morning, and she'd - he'd - go home.
And in times like these, who knew if he'd come back?
Luna swallowed, flicking a Newtwick - this silly little kind of bug rumored to eat fingernails, it was nearly invisible, of course - off her mattress. Luna stood up - she had to do something.
A/N: This is just something I came up with while I was re-reading Half Blood Prince. It's Luna/Neville, as you probably guessed. I'm thinking a two or three shot is all it will ever be, so leave me a review, becuase they really help with writers block, believe it or not.
