Pearl jumped up and her eyes widened. She had been waiting all day for this moment, the moment Rose finally came home from her date with Greg. "So, uh, how were things?" she asked trying to recompose herself.
Rose giggled because of course she had seen Pearl get too excited about her return. "Greg is such a great guy. I really like spending time with him." Even though Pearl had expected this response, she couldn't help but make a face. Greg was nothing special and she couldn't wait until Rose realized this too. Everything about Rose was so beautiful and perfect, from her curly hair to her wonderful round belly to the way she looked powerful without trying. Greg was just a loser human. Rose deserved so much better.
"Well I've been very busy today," Pearl said, exaggerating slightly, making her way into the kitchen. "I made you something." Pearl blushed a little but quickly turned from Rose to pull something from the fridge. "It's a cake…Amethyst helped." She put the pink cake on the counter, doing everything to avoid eye contact with Rose.
"Oh Pearl this is too sweet," she paused to playfully pinch her cheek, "but you know we don't need to eat."
Pearl looked up quickly, immediately hurt. "But…Greg made you a cake and you ate it. You said you loved it. My cake is better! You just have to try it."
Rose looked at the ground with a small smile. "Greg is so kind. He doesn't understand us that well. He worked really hard on that cake and I couldn't bare to tell him the truth. I didn't mean to say that I loved the cake. I meant that I love him."
It took all of Pearl's strength not to break down right there. "I…I understand. You didn't want to hurt him. I see." Pearl stepped away and blinked hard. "I was just trying to make you happy like Greg does."
Rose reached out and took Pearl's hand. "Pearl, you make me so happy. You're trustworthy. You're the best battle partner I've ever had. I think we make a very good team." Rose smiled at Pearl, hoping to reassure her.
Pearl smiled back. "I love it when you say that." They really were a good team. The best team there could be. They were meant to be together, forever, Pearl knew that. Sure sometimes it seemed like Rose didn't feel the same way about Pearl, but it's okay. Rose had lots of distractions. Pearl just wanted her to be happy.
