After Ali's death ... review
Justin Burton was sitting alone at the dining table, his eyes red from crying. Only three days ago, his best friend Ali had been involved in a tragic car accident, after stabbing Steven Mackintosh, the two's arch-enemy, and running out into the road.
Whatever happened, Justin would take the blame for it. He would go down for his friend, no matter what happened. Justin could scarcley believe that this was real, that it was really happening. He didn't know what to do.
The detectives would be 'round again soon. And the police. Justin didn't want to talk to them. He didn't want to talk to anyone, not even Darlene or Richard. There wasn't anyone to talk to. Except, maybe ...
He still had feelings for Becca. Sure, she was getting married in a few days, but It didn't stop him loving her. He was sure she felt the same.
There was suddenly a knock at the door. Justin went to get it, not quite knowing why he should, he was in no fit state to talk to anyone. He expected it would be the police, bombarding him with more questions on Ali's death and Macky's murder, and naming him the prime suspect. But It wasn't the police.
It was Becca.
Bewilldered, Justin cleared his throat, "Hey," He said quietly, glancing at her.
"Hi," Becca said shortly, "I just wanted to see how you were."
"Well, I've been better," Justin said, giving her a small smile, "I expected it to be the police asking me questions again."
"Oh, are they still coming round?" Becca asked.
"Yeah, probably think It was me," Justin said, rolling his eyes but then freezing at Becca's enquiring look, "It wasn't me, Becca. I swear to you."
"Well, of course I believe you," Becca said, "But, do you know anything about it? I mean, you were there, were you not?"
Justin hesitated. Yes, he could tell Becca everything, from Ali slipping out of the house with a knife to stabbing Macky in the chest by accident, to witnessing the dreadful accident involving his best friend. He could also tell her how he had hidden the knife in the hospital.
"No, I just came when Ali was hit by the car," Justin lied, not quite sure why he was lying to her. Would she turn him in? No, of course not. She liked him.
"Listen, Justin, I'm really sorry about Ali, and If there's anything I can do to help, just name it." Becca said softly, gazing at Justin.
Justin didn't know what to say. All he could do was clear his throat and croak, "Er- Ok, thank's alot, Becca."
"It's alright. Anyway, I've got to go now, I'll see you later." Becca concluded, swinging her handbag over her shoulder and pushing a strand of her blonde hair out of her eyes.
Justin looked up at her, "Yeah, see you." He said.
Becca kissed him on the cheek, "Just call me, OK?"
And with that, she had turned and left. Justin felt the huge knot in his chest loosen, just slightly, knowing that Becca was still there for him.
