The world is bright. L sees in colour, analysing each speck, until he can tell you by memory whether a blade of grass is Forest Green, Lime Green, or Irish Green. He knows this. He's fine with it.

When he meets Light Yagami, he analyses. He stares, he blinks, he logs every detail in his memory. He tries everything. No matter how hard he looks, He can't see. Everyone introduces them, and L smiles at where he thinks Light Yagami's face is, but nothing. All that's there is a Light-Shaped space, filled with grey.

He bites his thumbnail. Everyone thinks it's just another bad habit, but in fact he's pressing on a nerve, a small, tiny nerve that requires the right amount of pressure...

He gets it, and colours explode in front of his eyes. He can taste them, he can hear them, and he can feel them washing over him. He knows it'll only last a matter of seconds, so he takes his opportunity, and he opens his eyes wide, staring for any sign of colour in Light.

Nothing.

Days have passed, 43 cakes have been eaten, 17 packs of super-strength coffee consumed, but despite the amount of sugar and caffiene in L's system, there's still nothing from Light Yagami. Just a blank, Grey area. L hears him speak, he watched the space move, he feels his presence in the room, he smells his lemon soap, he can almost convince himself that he can taste the air around Light Yagami, but his eyes never see colour.

L sits on his chair, if you can call it sitting, and he hunches his back extra, he opens his eyes wider, he listens more accutley, but still,

Nothing.

L is beginning to wonder if it's his brain. He can see a shape...a strange shape, not animal, not quite human...it floats behind Light Yagami like a bad smell. It hangs in the air, it moves, and when it speaks, L can almost hear the voice. Light Yagami never appears.

L tries everything, he eats more healthily, he sleeps more, he washes his ears out, he cleans his teeth four times a day, he excersises regularly, he tests his brain, pushing himself to new levels of genius, but nothing makes him see Light Yagami in colour.

Until...

Until that day.

Until he fell. He was working, He was seeing, He was thinking...and then it all stopped. The second Watari died. L had exactly 12 seconds before he met his own end.

He thought.

His mind went blank...

an he saw. He realised his mistake. He was looking with his eyes open. Seeing through eyes restricted his field of vision, he realised that now. He could only see in colour. But this...This was so much more. This was...seeing. He saw Light Yagami, and he thought 'How can one so young have eyes so old?' and he saw it. The creature hanging over Light Yagami. He saw Number's over Light Yagami's head. They were counting down. Counting down from 100.

And then he looked up.

And he saw them.

10.
