The First Kiss

Castiel had been standing there for a while watching as Dean paced the room. He could see the anxiety bleeding from him along with the pain. The situation had not gone well, Samuel was a liability, but Castiel knew that Dean didn't want to accept that.

He understood. For once he felt like this he understood. Lucifer had been a much loved brother once, a brother who made the wrong choices, as had Gabriel and Michael. The situation was not the same but the parallels were stark and Castiel remembered the depth of pain, his brothers' failings had brought about for all.

Dean bore that weight alone or tried to, along with the weight of trying, and it seemed failing, to convince his brother to a better path. That had never been Castiel's fate, to try and convince his brothers of the error of their ways.

As Dean turned again in his pacing, he stumbled and Castiel was at his side holding him up immediately. Dean turned towards him, eyes pained and he whispered, "Cas. . ."

The deep sense of loss in that single word had Castiel pulling him closer, reaching up to brush a hand soothingly through Dean's hair. The feeling inside had been growing, noticeably so in the last few weeks, but Castiel believed it had been there since he pulled Dean from the pit. Dean was more than just a human. He felt so much, so many emotions that he wasn't sure he could tie to human words. The urge to protect and cherish was strong and he allowed himself to give in a little, leaning in to kiss Dean's forehead.

He heard as Dean's breathing hitched in surprise, felt as he lifted up in surprise, eyes meeting his own, with a softly exhaled, "Er, what? What was that Cas?"

"A kiss, Dean," was the simple reply, as he started to lean back in for another. "This will be better, I think." He tilted Dean's head with a gentle hand under his chin, leaning back in to place a tender kiss on Dean's lips.

It took a moment or two before Dean began to return the kiss, but once he did, Castiel felt the tension ease and a flood of acceptance overwhelm them both.
