This came out of no where.
"Oh my gosh," Rigby heard Mordecai grumble under his breath.
He looked over at his friend who wore a scowl on his face.
"What is it, dude?" he asked.
Mordecai's scowl deepened. "Him."
Rigby looked in the direction he was looking and he squinted his eyes.
A lone figure was coming down the path behind the snack bar heading toward the area of tables where the duo was sitting.
Rigby's eyes widened as he recognized the ostrich named Jeremy.
"What the H does he want?" Rigby asked irritated.
"Whatever it is, he better make it quick," Mordecai replied.
The two watched as Jeremy approached their table.
Jeremy stopped in front of the table and looked at their expressions before grinning.
"So, I see you two are still working at this lame park."
"We like working at the park for your information," Mordecai said.
Jeremy rolled his eyes. "Only losers with no education would work as a groundskeeper."
"Oh yeah, then why did you apply to work here when you have a degree in technology?" Rigby asked.
"I needed a part-time job to earn money, but what about you? Do you have any college degrees?"
Mordecai noticed Rigby tense up and changed the topic. "Where's Chad?"
Jeremy shifted his gaze from Rigby to Mordecai. "He's working. So Rigby, back to degrees."
Rigby bit his lip as he looked at Mordecai not knowing what to do.
"Jeremy, why are you here?" Mordecai asked.
"I came here to take a walk and then I saw you two. What, am I not allowed to say hello?" Jeremy responded.
"You didn't say hello. What do you want?" Mordecai said as he glared at the avian.
Jeremy turned his head toward Rigby. "I want to speak with Rigby."
Rigby looked at Jeremy confused. "Why do you want to talk to me?"
Jeremy got close to Rigby. "Tell me, Rigby. Why did you apply to work here?"
Rigby fidgeted in his seat as he looked up at the face too close to him. "What's it matter to you?"
"You're awfully defensive about your job here at the park. All I want to know is why you're so sensitive about it."
Mordecai watched as his friend said nothing and glared up at Jeremy with clenched fists.
Jeremy smirked as Rigby gave no response. "What's wrong, Rigby? Didn't get any degrees with that pea-sized brain of yours?"
Mordecai saw Rigby blink away tears as the raccoon pushed the ostrich away from him and jumped up.
Mordecai stood up as Jeremy stepped toward Rigby and pushed him. "Come on, Rigby. Just answer my question and I'll leave you alone."
Rigby stumbled backwards from the push into Mordecai.
Mordecai caught Rigby and held him against his chest by the shoulders. "Leave him alone, Jeremy," he said through clenched teeth.
Jeremy laughed and stepped forward only to have Mordecai push Rigby behind him and stand between the two.
"Why so protective, Mordecai? I just want an answer to my question," Jeremy said with another smirk.
"He doesn't need to answer your question. Now back off," Mordecai said.
"Why should I? It's a simple question, really." Jeremy took another step forward.
Mordecai clenched his fist and tried to keep his cool as the ostrich kept coming.
He backed up with Rigby still behind him.
If he takes another step, I'm gonna sock him.
Just as Jeremy moved one foot, Mordecai threw a punch to Jeremy's face.
Jeremy hissed in pain and held his hand to his cheek.
"Back off or defend yourself, you jerk," Mordecai said.
He glared at Mordecai and Rigby before walking away.
Mordecai smirked before looking back at Rigby.
"You okay, Rigby?"
"Yeah, thanks for standing up for me," the raccoon said.
"Anytime, dude. I'll always stand up for you," Mordecai said ruffling his friend's hair.
Rigby looked up at Mordecai. "Hey, Mordecai?"
"Yeah, dude?"
"You totally showed him," he said with a grin.
