"C'mon Roxas lighten up." Axel urged his best friend.
"Why?" Roxas asked. "What do I have left?"
"Oh, quit being depressed." Axel rolled his eyes. "So what if Naminé cheated on you?"
"So what?" Roxas almost yelled. "So she was my life, the reason for my existence!"
"Go find someone else." Axel advised. When Roxas ignored him, he added. "At least come to the party. I promise Riku and Naminé wont be there."
"Fine." Roxas conceded. "Lead the way." Axel led him outside and up the road.
"It's just around the corner." Axel looked back. "Roxas?" The street was empty. Axel sighed and turned around to look for his friend.
The moon shone bright overhead and the stars sparked down on the blonde escapee as Roxas hopped a fence. He didn't care where he was going as long as it was away from Axel. Glancing around at his unfamiliar surroundings, Roxas spotted a large bush with blue flowers, a perfect hiding spot. Settling himself on the dirt on hidden by the bush, Roxas tried to think what he would do now. Then a light came on. Roxas put a hand up to his face to shield his eyes.
It was then he noticed that he was in fact in the back garden of a large house. On a balcony of the second floor was a girl about Roxas's age. She was wearing a modest black dress, her hair was short and black, and her blue eyes glinted in the moonlight like sapphires. Her pale skin reflected the moonlight, so that she seemed to glow, like a candle.
Without noticing Roxas had been talking slow steps forward while gazing at the girl. Then he tripped and fell with a crash to the ground. The girl look at the bush and gasped.
"Who's there?" She asked nervously. Roxas couldn't help but think that even her voice was beautiful. Roxas got up.
"I'm Roxas, I live across the street." He brushed leaves out of his hair. "Sorry to barge in, I was trying to get away from a friend.
The girl still looked suspicious. "Why were you hiding?" But then another voice rang from inside the house, and Roxas dived for the bush.
"Xion, I have wonderful news!" Came a man's voice. The voice was hollow, but the man was clearly trying to sound excited.
"Yes father?" Xion responded.
"In three days you will marry Vanitas." Her father announced.
"What? You said you'd let me decide."
"I've made up my mind." Xion's father had stopped trying to sound excited.
"I won't do it!"
"You would dare defy me?"
"I'm my own person!" Xion shouted. There came the sound of flesh hitting flesh, and Xion yelping in pain. Roxas felt his heart jump and his mouth go dry. He wanted to help Xion but didn't dare jump out of the bush.
"You are my property!" Xion's dad yelled. "You have no choice!" There came the slamming of a door and Xion came back out onto the balcony. There was a large purple bruise on her face.
"Are you alright?" Roxas gasped.
"I'm fine." Xion answered. Roxas knew it was a lie. "That was my dad, Saïx."
"Nice guy." Roxas commented sarcastically.
"Yeah," Xion snorted. "He's almost as bad as Vanitas."
"I wish I could help." Roxas said sadly.
"You do?"
"Yeah." Roxas blushed. "I think you're beautiful." Xion likewise went red.
"Roxas I-" Then Xion's door flew open and Saïx's voice rang out.
"Who are you talking to?" Roxas froze. Xion waved him on.
"Go, I'll be fine. No one father" Roxas bolted the fence and dashed back home.
Roxas dashed home and collapsed on a chair. Roxas knew he got Xion into trouble and felt guilty about it. Still it was good to have met her. Roxas was no longer questioning the purpose of his life.
