A PERFECT DAY
He sighed, looking at his friend. It wasn't right. Jim shouldn't be there lying unconscious, hooked to all those machines.
"Hey, Big Guy," Blair began, sitting next to the bed. "It's time to wake up, Jim. You've been here for a week now. Man, it shouldn't have ended up like this. You know, yesterday, we managed to catch that guy who attacked you. After a few minutes with a very angry Simon, he told us everything we wanted to know." He sighed sadly "It's my fault… if I hadn't distracted you, you would have seen that guy taking out a gun… Then you…"
He stopped. He still could see his friend, his partner, lying in a pool of his own blood in that dark alley. There was so much blood… Next thing he had noticed… there were people around him and Jim, trying to treat the detective's wounds. What had happened? It was like a horrible nightmare… Except that it was real.
Sandburg spent the first few days in the hospital at Jim's side. He could hardly remember if he ate or drank anything. He just sat and waited for Jim to get better…to breathe on his own… to open his eyes. A week after the incident Blair was still waiting, leaving the hospital only when absolutely necessary. The worst thing was coming back to the loft, even for a short time.
Blair closed his eyes fighting back his emotion.
"Right, sorry… I'm supposed to tell you something good. Well, I'm… I don't know what to say, really. You would be in seventh heaven hearing that, wouldn't you, huh?" Blair smiled a little before continuing "Don't tell anyone, but Henri is preparing a big party for you, so you see, there are no excuses for you. You have to wake up, Jim."
There was no response from Jim, but Blair had gotten used to those one-sided conversations. He looked at Jim.
"Man, I've never thought I'd end up working with a policeman, dragging down thugs, killers, solving cases." He murmured "I was supposed to work at the University, to spend hours in libraries, organize a trip or an exhibition for the students. A safe and clean job. Maybe someday I would settle down with a beautiful girl as a wife… Yeah, could you imagine that? Me either, Big Guy. It would be too much, I think."
He stood up and approached to the window and had a brief look outside.
"It's a lovely, warm Monday, Jim. The sun is shining brightly. It would be a perfect day. Please, come back, Big Guy." Blair whispered turning around "Make this day perfect…"
For few seconds a strange feeling overwhelmed him. A feeling like Jim would open his eyes in a while and everything would be alright. But he was wrong. A figure on the hospital bed made no move, no sound. Blair sat on the chair, eyes glued to Jim's pale face. He still had that strange feeling that something would happened soon.
Hours later the miracle really happened. Jim began to breathe on his own. It was a great beginning of the perfect day.
The end
