His Little Scholar
Prompt: Stunning achievement...
A/N: For LJ, and a challenge against St. Harridan.
"Lookit!"
The paper was shoved into his face, flying around as the child bounced on her feet. How the hell was he supposed to look at the page with her moving it around like that? He timed her pace, snatching it out of her hand and holding it over his head. For some reason, there was a little gold star in the top right corner of the paper, and a scribble that appeared to read, "Excellent work!"
He raised a brow, placing it on the desk. "Well, what is it?"
"Kenny!" Yachiru stuck her tongue out at him, obviously upset that he didn't understand why she was excited. "I got a grade! Don't ya see it?"
The captain nodded, eyes darting back to the scribbles on the paper. "Yeah, I see it. So ya got a grade. What's so excitin' about that? Ya don't need no damned schoolin', Yachiru."
She gasped, climbing up onto the desk, pressing his face between her tiny hands. "Well, Re-chan said she needed help makin' fliers for this thing she was doing, uh... That flower 'ranging thingy! So, I asked if I could make 'em, and she let me. But I wanted a grade, 'cuz Yun-Yun said that ya can only get 'em at school, so Re-chan promised to grade my paper if I was a good helper! Don't ya see, Kenny! I got a good grade!"
Technically, it wasn't a grade. It was just Unohana's comment on a half-wrinkled sheet of paper. Still, if Yachiru was proud of it, then why the hell shouldn't he be? Kenpachi shrugged, poking her little nose with the tip of his pen. "Nice job, kiddo," he grinned. "Now, if Unohana really does use your design, I'll buy ya a bag of candy as a present."
Yachiru giggled, darting out into the hallway. "Then we gotta go to the store now," she said, walking back in with a stack of papers as tall as she was. Yachiru held one up, pointing to the text on the bottom of the page. "Re-chan loved it so much, we made the fliers right away. Though, I still don't know what a flier does. Is it like a kite?"
Kenpachi sighed, kicking his chair to the side. He'd been looking for a reason to ditch paperwork for the better part of the day, and it seemed he'd finally found it.
"C'mon, kiddo," he said, lifting her off the floor. "I'll get ya one of them big ass lollipops, too."
