Any warnings: Season one. Everything and up to the season finale. This is an AU after it. Caroline never got into the ICU, but Tyler's dad really did die. Season two never happened.

A/N: As already said. This is an AU world. Matt and Tyler were friends before... And season 2 never really happened. Just remember people, write some Caroline centric stuff... let's keep her alive!

Caroline is the only one he can confide in when it happens the first time. He changed, he turned into something he didn't understand, and the worse of it was that he couldn't tell his mother about it.
Oddly enough it is Caroline that found him the day after the full moon, naked and scared in her garden. She didn't say anything, just went into the house, retrieved an old blanket and helped him into her home.
They figured out what he had been after her mother caught them that day together. Caroline fully dressed and sitting on the living room couch, he naked and wrapped in her blanket, standing before her, having a nervous breakdown.
Funny enough Sheriff Forbes knew his secret due to his fathers. And that was how they found out what he was.
How ironic it seemed that the daughter of the only woman who knew about his fathers secret would be the one to hold his now.
In any case. Caroline was supportive and nice, and entertaining enough she actually cooked lasagne the first few days for him. To show him her support, and because it was the only reaction she got for him until she figured out how to act around him.
Only weeks after that first awkward awakening in her garden, were they able to have a less awkward friendship. The secret was what held them together, even when Matt's jealousy threatened to put a stop to their friendship.
And Caroline surprised him by sticking with him rather than Matt. He was grateful for her support, especially since she was the only one he trusted, but sometimes he did feel guilty and sorry for breaking up the relationship between his best friend and the girl who had become the most important person to him.
And now, months after his first transformation he finally came to realise the obvious answer as to why he was so comfortable and trusting with her. It was so obvious that he wondered why he never saw it in the first place. She was his most important person after all.
He, Tyler Lockwood, was in love with Caroline Forbes.
Now he just needed a way to make her see that she was in love with him too, and that they would make a great couple.
