A Little Brother

The ground was shaking.

A pool of water jumped from the ground and morphed into a creature. The water creature, named Chaos, grabbed a hold of a tree. Never had this happened before. He screamed in fright.

"Tikal!" He cried for the only other person he knew. He took comfort in her presence. She would know what to do. Maybe she can stop the earth from shaking.

Even though he was thousands of years old, he was as experienced as a young child. He had been sealed up in a huge emerald until five years ago when an echidna presented the seven emeralds to his prison. He was able to escape into a strange world. His rescuer, Tikal, had been with him ever since.

A few days ago, Chaos and Tikal had found a pool a few days ago. Chaos wanted to explore it. Pools had always fascinated him. But Tikal pulled him back and said not to go in there, ever.

"But why?" He had asked.

"It's too close to villagers who will want to hurt you." She replied. "Besides you have than enough pools to satisfy your needs."

Tikal managed to bring Chaos back to their jungle home but the water creature still was curious about the pool. So this morning, he snuck passed a sleeping Tikal and started to make his way towards the forbidden pool. He got lost and started to back track when the world started shaking.

There were horrible cracking noises everywhere. Trees were falling everywhere. Chaos didn't know what was happening. He peeked around the tree he was hugging. He saw light reflecting against something.

Water!

Chaos let go of the tree and ran as fast as he could to the body of liquid. He slid in just a tree splashed in. To his delight, the pool was deep. He hid out underwater until the shaking stopped. He swam up and broke the surface. The jungle was a mess. He wasn't scared because of that. He was scared because he had no idea where he was.

He was really regretting sneaking off now.

Chaos let the current take him downstream. He floated in strange silence. Then something drove him out of the water. It was a whimpering sound. Chaos stood on the bank, listening. There it was again!

He tracked it to a log. Chaos peeked inside. It was a creature. It kind of looked like Tikal, but it was smaller and a darker color. The baby saw Chaos looking at him and cowered, hiding its face in his spiky hands.

"Don't worry," Chaos tried to soothe him. "I won't hurt you." A few moments passed before the creature uncovered his eyes and stared in wonder at Chaos with violet eyes.

"Chaos!" Tikal's voice scared both of them. Chaos stood up to see the echidna running up to him.

"Oh, Chaos, I thought you were dead."

"I'm sorry, Tikal." Chaos snuggled up to his guardian for a moment before remembering about the Tikal look-alike. "Look what I found!"

Tikal looked where Chaos was pointing.

"Oh, it's a baby." She held her arms out to it. "Come here, little one." The baby crawled to Tikal and Tikal stood up.

"He looks like you!" Chaos exclaimed.

"That's because he an echidna as well."

"Can we keep him?" Tikal hesitated at the water creature's question.

"Well…" Chaos turned his pleading eyes towards his mother figure, which won her over. "Okay. What do you want to call him?"

Chaos looked at the baby in Tikal's arms. The baby raised a hand at Chaos and tapped him lightly on his nose.

"How about Knuckles?" Tikal nodded her head in agreement.

"Don't worry, little Knuckles." Chaos whispered to his new brother. "We'll take care of you. Who knows? Maybe one day you'll return the favor.
