[Author's note: Remus recall's happenings while MWPP are at Hogwarts, and how Peter changed.]
Back The Way it Was
Peter wasn't always like he is now. On the first day of Hogwarts, James and Sirius met and fought in the corridor. I think it was over who's parents had better jobs, or something equally stupid. Anyway, when the Prefect caught them, they were forced to spend the rest of the trip in the same compartment. The only one still reasonably empty was the one where Peter and I were sitting.
I can still remember everything about that train trip. It was, after all, the beginning of the best part of my life.
Peter was sitting almost across from me, and our sides were to the door. It was slammed open by a large hand, and to slightly scruffy boys were tossed in. The owner of the hand said, "You two sit tight for the rest of the trip, or you can expect a detention from Filch, as soon as we get to Hogwarts." Then the door was slammed shut again. Sirius and James sat down as far from each other as possible. We were alone.
It was a long time before anyone said anything. Then finally, I could stand it no longer. "I'm Remus, and he's Peter. Who are you guys?"
"James."
"Sirius."
Peter spoke up then. "Like the star?"
"Yeah," answered Sirius.
"That's so cool."
"Sort of."
There was another pause. This one seemed more awkward. I have never been very good at starting conversations, and no one else seemed to know what to say next. We might all have gone our separate ways at that point, and never have become friends. But then Peter spoke up again.
"Say, what were you guys fighting about anyway?"
"Nothing," came the reply from two corners of the small room.
"Then why don't you guys make up? Seems like it would be good to have friends here. My dad says the first days are always really hard. I mean, I don't know if he's right an' all, seeing as he's a muggle, and only went to muggle boarding school, but he said they're all the same in that respect."
"How about no," Sirius countered gruffly.
"You could start by introducing yourselves," continued Peter, ignoring Sirius's comment. "My dad says that's the surefire way to get to be friends. Start with introductions, and what you like to do, and where you live, and what you wanna do when you grow up, and…"
"We already went through the necessary pleasantries, now go talk to the Remus kid and leave us alone."
"Ha! You said us. You see, its working already. I just know you guys are gonna become best friends."
I think James was getting rather sick of Peter rattling on, so he got up, and sat down next to Sirius.
"Maybe it'll be quieter over here," was all he said.
Peter, his task completed, came and sat down with me.
"Hi, I'm Peter Pettigrew. I'm from Scotland, and my dad's a muggle. My mom's a witch, but I haven't seen her ever. Or at least I don't remember her. She left when I was only one, and my dad raised me all by himself. He was really proud when I got my letter. He says it was the best thing that ever happened in our family. What'd your family think when you got your letter?"
I could see why James had moved. Peter had a way of talking so much, about such pointless things. It hurt my brain just to listen to him. But I answered anyway. I needed friends too.
"My parents were pretty proud. They weren't sure whether I'd get in, so they gave me a party and everything. They're both magical, and my mom's a party planner person. So she knows how to plan parties."
[Author's note: Anyone who seems OoC, probably is, so please correct me. I don't have any of the books with me right now. Also, I need a new title and a beta reader. While I'm asking for things, a dog, the sixth Harry Potter book, and Vote for Larry would also be nice.]
