LIKE THE SUN CAME OUT (or, the one where Stiles asks Lydia to Prom)

There were seven days until Beacon Hills High School's senior prom. For weeks it was all he had heard about- what people were wearing, who was going with who, where was the cheapest place to get a spray tan- but Stiles Stilinski had been so busy trying not to die that he had barely noticed the day was approaching.

"Just do it." Scott said, louder than he probably should have. Stiles glared at him half heartedly.

"Seriously, dude. If you don't ask her now it'll be too late."

"I know. I'll just wait until..."

Scott sighed, and Stiles bit the inside of his lip. He hadn't realized until then just how nervous he was. His heart thundered in his chest.

"What are you waiting for?" Scott asked, and Stiles realized he didn't have an answer. What was he waiting for? The Dread Doctors had finally been defeated, the pack had escaped Eichen House intact (just about), his relationship with Malia was over, if it had ever really existed in the first place. And those days in Eichen house, when him and Lydia had been so close, he was almost sure... He glanced over at Lydia, talking to Kira a few meters away from them. Her hair floated around her shoulders, glinting like gold in the sun. A smile twitched on her mouth. Her hands flew as she spoke, and for a second Stiles was mesmerized just watching their movements. She was beautiful. God, she was so beautiful.

What am I waiting for?

"What if she says no?" Stiles asked, his moment of courage vanishing swiftly. His hands were shaking.

Scott shrugged. "It's just prom, Stiles."

"It is not just prom. It's prom with Lydia Martin. You know what that means. I've been planning this since third grade. Third FREAKING GRADE, Scott. How dare you say this is just prom? That's blasphe..." He hadn't been aware of how loud his voice had risen until he heard a sharp cough behind him, and everything went silent.

"Is there something you want to ask me?" Lydia's voice came from behind him, half amused and half something he couldn't read. Just the sound of it sent shivers through him. Scott was fighting to contain his laughter.

"Umm...Lydia! Hi!" He turned around, hoping not all the blood in his body had rushed to his cheeks. He couldn't meet her eyes, searching instead to meet Scott's gaze for reassurance. All his friend gave him was a thumbs up.

Breathe, Stiles. Breathe. You can do this. It's not like you've been running through this moment in your head for ten years or anything.

He went through everything he had planned over the past decade in his head- cheesy pick up lines and self deprecating sarcasm and dramatic declarations of love- but none of it seemed right. With her right there, staring at him with a smile on her face, he had nothing to say but...

"Will you go to prom with me?"
Then Lydia's smile grew wider, wider and wider until it split her entire face. Her eyes lit up, her hands clasping together. Stiles could feel his own face doing the same, although he barely dared to hope.

"Oh Stiles, I thought you'd never ask."

"Is that a yes?"

"Of course it's a yes. Yes."

She wrapped her arms around him unexpectedly, and after a moment of happy shock her wrapped his arms around her too. His sigh of relief turned into a laugh, and in a moment they were both laughing. Laughing like they would never stop, clinging to each other like they would never let go. Stiles could feel her heart beating against his own chest. After the pain and the darkness of the past few months, that burst of happiness was like light finally streaming back into their worlds.

Like the sun came out.
