Madam Kovarian's story is just as long and tragic as River Song's. They're more alike than River would like to think. The only difference is that River escaped.
It all started with a girl. Now, this girl wasn't anything special, not really. She lived in the fifty second century, in a small human colony. It had only a few businesses, including a school, a hospital, and a post office. Most people who grew up there moved away the minute they were old enough. But, not this girl. She loved it there. Her best childhood memories took place in that small colony, and she planned to raise her eventual children there. She never got the chance.
Her name was Brina Kovarian, and by the time she was nineteen, her whole family was dead. For weeks after her last relation, her mother, died, she spent every night in a bar, drowning her sorrows in a bottle. One night, she met a man. She never got his name and he never got hers, and indeed she couldn't remember the night very well, but she did remember his eyes. They were old eyes, on his young body.
But either way, two months later, Brina was told that she was pregnant. She was ecstatic. She could have family again! A family was all she wanted. Brina never got that family. She died in childbirth, only lasting to name her baby. Eva.
Poor baby Eva had nowhere to go. None of Brina's family was left and the nearest foster care was three planets away. So, the hospital put out an ad in the paper. Obviously, this wouldn't normally happen, but the doctor in charge had never particularly liked Brina. He'd hated her, in fact. So, he took the first chance he got to foist her unfortunate offspring on somebody else.
This 'someone else' just happened to be a man by the name of General Briner. He worked with a new program called the Silence. See, they'd heard about what would happen should the Doctor live, and were attempting to put a stop to it. They would fail, but they didn't know that.
This new program needed a commander, and as much as General Briner wanted to be that commander, he knew they needed someone ruthless, someone who hated the Doctor, someone raised hating the Doctor.
Eva Kovarian would do nicely.
