I woke up on a cold, wintry night, the bed sheets damp with sweat. Beep! A text from Alex. Go figure. Alex was my secret boyfriend. Alex and I live in a world where it's illegal to have a boyfriend, to kiss in public. All because of a "disease" called amor deliria nervosa. Word has it that once you had the disease, it'd kill you, both when you have it… and when you don't. I once believed this lie. But that changed when I met Alex. Because of him, I have the golden truth that love isn't wrong. But I have to act like I'm forever smothered in this lie. Alex saved me from a life of emptiness, of no feeling or doubt. If only the world was different. Ever so quietly, I grab my coat. I'm headed through the bedroom doorway when I hear a creak. I spin around to find Grace standing there. She cocks her head in a very girly way, a way of asking me where I was going. "Secret" I whisper to Grace. She nods her head and plops back into bed. Grace can always keep a secret. I shrug into the white coat, which is the color of snow. Alex and I have met and gone to Deering Farms constantly, my friend Hana comes with us sometimes. I tiptoe ever so lightly, careful when I jump over the creaky bottom stairs. I practically glide through the door. I'm outside. No one is in sight. Good, but I still have to be aware of the clumps of regulators monitoring the city of Portland, Oregon. I don't take my old bike. I walk a couple of blocks, and then I run. I'm also aware of Invalids like me sneaking out of the house. I check my glow-in-the-dark watch, 10:30 is the time. By now, I should've been fast asleep, not lurking the streets like a typical Invalid, but I don't care. But I don't want to be caught and thrown in the Crypts, a jail for Invalids and syphazisers. I shudder at the thought. I hear a group of regulators around the corner ahead. I stop, panting as quiet as I can. I wait a while, then I hear the group leave. I turn the corner and run.
