The One That Got Away
A moving truck pulled into Schroeder's driveway. He was, sadly, moving away; permanently. He was moving into the city in a fancy apartment building. Schroeder was sad because he was going to leave all his friends behind; and Lucy.
The thought of Lucy van Pelt half made Schroeder smile and half made him grimace. She was his muse; but he was going to loose her once he moved away.
The whole Peanuts gang stood on Schroeder's lawn. They were almost young adults now, sixteen, at the most. They said their goodbyes, and Schroeder gave Charlie Brown his new phone number so they could call him whenever they wanted to.
But before Schroeder could climb into the truck, a familiar voice came calling after him. "Schroeder, wait!" It was Lucy. Schroeder blushed. She looked positively, absolutely beautiful that day with her natural, jet-black curls and brand-new light-blue dress. That was Lucy; always wearing dresses.
"Schroeder," she said, when she finally stood in front of him. "Remember me," she said softly, and held his hands. Very slowly she gave him a kiss.
An "awww" came from the audience behind. Schroeder's reply was, "I will." He waved goodbye for the last time and then got into the truck. It started moving, and Schroeder rolled down the window and waved goodbye. Lucy sadly waved back.
With the setting sun, everyone quietly watched as the vehicle faded into the distance.
One year later...
Lucy was passing by an old house when she thought, I can't stand it anymore! She marched up its driveway and then walked up to the front door. She took a deep breath and turned the knob. It was open! She opened the door quickly and then shut it.
The house was Schroeder's old house; she hadn't called him in a year. Not since he had moved, anyway; also because everytime she tried nowdays, it seemed like his phone was disconnected.
She sighed and then walked around. There was no furniture to be found at all! Lucy walked over
to were Schroeder's piano used to be. He had long since traded his toy piano for a regular sized one, and instead of leaning on the back of it, she would actually lie down on it so she would face Schroeder.
Lucy sat down and felt tears forming in her eyes. "Oh, Schroeder. I wish you were here." Then she got up. In the corner of her eye, she noticed something white. It was a piece of crumpled up paper in a dusty-corner. She picked it up and gasped. It was a composition. Not just any composition, but one about her.
Its title was 'Lucy' and the the small letters beneath it said, "For a girl I love." Lucy gasped again and laughed, a cheerful laugh, her tears dampening the dusty paper. She wondered why Schroeder had thrown it away.
She straightened it out, folded it up, and then stuck it in her pocket safely. Lucy went out of his house, and stood at the end of the driveway, just staring at it. In her mind, she was thinking. Lucy then took out something from her purse; it was a picture.
A picture of Schroeder playing the piano. She smiled and watched the sun set and looked up to the blue, red, and purple skies above her.
"You were the one that got away," Lucy muttered under her breath, "the One That Got Away."
