WARNING: TORCHWOOD SERIES 3: CHILDREN OF EARTH SPOILERS. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW MAJOR CHARACTER RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENTS, DON'T READ ON.

OK, so just in case you didn't know, Alice is Jack's daughter. Steven is Alice's son. For the purposes of this story, Alice is helping out Torchwood's investigation.

"Come on!" Gwen shouted, pulling her gun out of her coat pocket as she ran along the alleyway. Jack was already ahead of her, and Rhys wasn't far behind.

"I don't know-" Alice stammered. "I mean, I'm not..."

"Trained?" Ianto asked, giving her arm a tug to get her moving. "Neither's Rhys. But we need all the help we can get."

Alice relented and joined the young Welshman in running after his colleagues. Ianto could sense her reluctance, but the combination of the 456 and seven Weevils running amok in Cardiff meant that all hands were needed on deck.

Jack reached the band of Weevils first and fired a round of bullets, felling two. Gwen arrived behind him and shot down a third, screaming at the public to move out of the way. Typical for them to all want to watch the frenzy. A lot of Retcon would be needed later, she thought.

Rhys shot a couple of bullets, taking one of the Weevils in the knee. As Ianto appeared, he took down another one. The shooting continued, with Alice struggling to get the members of the public to leave.

Suddenly, a small boy of about three broke through the crowd and ran towards the Weevils. His mother screamed, and sensing the impending danger, Alice dived in the way and pushed the boy to the ground. A bullet ripped through her thigh, and Gwen ran over to them, dropping her gun. She pulled the boy out from underneath Alice and carried him, sobbing, back to his mother. Quickly, though, her attention turned back to Alice. The only Weevil that hadn't now been taken down was biting into her shoulder.

Horrified screams came from the crowd, and Ianto killed the Weevil immediately. Jack ran over and pushed it away, cradling Alice in his arms as he tried to stem the bleeding. Rhys pulled off his jacket and used it to stem the flow from her thigh, as Jack pressed the bottom of his coat against Alice's shoulder wound. Several people in the crowd were dialling for an ambulance, so Gwen didn't need to. She walked over to where Jack was clinging tightly to Alice's body.

"Stay with me, Alice," Jack begged. "Come on, you've got to fight. For me. For Steven."

But as Alice's eyes glazed over, motionless, he knew there was nothing he could do. Gwen crouched down and checked for a pulse. There wasn't one.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered.

Jack nodded, understanding. "There's nothing more we could have done. Let's get this lot cleaned up, then I'll have to work out the best way of breaking the news to Steven."
