Summary: Dawn reflects, post series

Dawn only cried when Buffy was not around, usually late at night when her sister was on patrol. She hated Cleveland, but most of all she missed him. Why did he have to sacrifice himself just when she needed him the most?

It had never been about love. The night that Buffy had died, it was the only thing they felt they could do in the midst of their grief and longing. She vividly remembered the closeness they had felt. Yes, there had been pain, but it was only momentary and then there had only been sweet release from their mutual pain. They were together many times over that summer, clinging to each other with an almost desperate need.

He had stopped coming to her after the resurrection. He had Buffy back and soon forgot about her willing arms. She missed him terribly, her body aching for him. It was even worse when he disappeared for those months. Nobody knew what had happened to him. Suddenly he had returned and he was crazy, even dangerous. She had been frightened of him for the first time in her life. But gradually, he returned to his old self, except for one difference. Buffy wanted nothing to do with him.

It started up again easily enough when things started to look bleak for the world. While her sister was busy with the Potential Slayers, it was easy to escape notice. She would often sneak down to the basement in the middle of the night to be with him. His restored soul made him more tender and loving during their interludes. If given enough time, she could have loved him. She laughed bitterly.

Time.

As if that was the only thing keeping them apart. His love for Buffy never ended and she had to hold back a cry of dismay when she realized he was gone, all because of her sister.

Dawn heard the key in the lock and quickly wiped her face. Buffy tiptoed into Dawn's bedroom.

"Dawn?" Buffy whispered.

Dawn didn't respond, pretending to be asleep. Buffy sighed and left the room, closing the door behind her. Dawn reached down to her slightly rounded belly. She thought it was impossible, that it couldn't happen with vampires. She didn't even have a chance to tell him before-

She paused. It was slight, but she had definitely felt the first flicker of movement from the life in her belly.

"Spike," she breathed.
