~Guidelines to Creating a Better Fan-Fiction~
Quotation marks ("") are for dialog (two or more characters speaking to each other), not apostrophes (' ').
Double space in between each sentence (Go back and do after you done writing if you have to, I do it).
ALWAYS indent every new paragraph-basically when you switch ideas or description- or when two or more characters are conversing.
For a consistent read, PLEASE don't add Author's Notes in the middle of a chapter. It takes away from your story.
ALWAYS check the spelling AND meaning of a word you're unsure of
Don't post a chapter unless it has been checked over at 3-4 times.
When looking over your 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd draft, replace any repeated words. Your eyes and mind will appreciate the variety.
Even if you use spell check, read it over yourself and maybe get 'old school' and pull out the dictionary or thesaurus.
If you typed in a Brand Name and the spelling program says it's wrong; either ignore it or check the website of the Brand if you're not sure.
DOUBLE SPACE, DOUBLE SPACE, DOUBLE SPACE!!!!!!! A) It helps your Beta's correct your work, B) It's easier for everyone to read, and C) It looks nicer.
When using abbreviations like CD, DVD, time periods (70s), DO NOT use an apostrophe. *Examples: CDs DVDs 70s 1900s*
When using numbers; an age should be written out (Seventeen). Addresses and phone numbers can be used in number form. *There can be a exception to certain plots*
REMEMBER!! You don't always have to write out and explain everything. Let the reader delve into the world you've created. They're smart cookies, they'll get it.
Refrain from using IM lingo (unless specific to the story: "IM-ing with the Cullens", ya-da, ya-da.)
If something is written with the intent to be funny, don't write LOL, LMAO, or HAHA. Write out the reaction not necessarily the sound. Use imagery, description!
("Why did the chicken cross the road?" She asked with enthusiasm.
"To get away from your lack of humor." He retorted, rolling his eyes.)
