Hero
Summary: Everyone mourns Captain America, but the Avengers mourn Steve Rogers.
Dr. Doom had attacked Stark Industries hoping to once again steal the arc reactor that powered the building. The Avengers were going against Doom-bots while Doom used a large titan robot to try and break through Jarvis's security.
Tony wasn't in the greatest mind-set. Quite pissed with Doom for destroying a few of his cars and much of his garage, Tony wasn't entirely watching himself and Doom took advantage. With his titan, Doom shot a charge beam of red hot energy.
"Tony!" Clint warned from his perch.
Steve heard it, instantly he ran to his friend's back and braced himself and his shield. Steve grunted from the force but the shield held. Steve was going to succeed when suddenly the worse happened.
The shield cracked, everyone's eyes widened at the sound. Steve gasped and in that moment, he was being shot at but Steve stood his ground as he screamed, he couldn't let his friends get hurt.
"Steve!" everyone shouted.
Steve managed a reassuring smile and then, he was gone.
Everyone was shocked into silence while Dr. Doom laughed manically. Hulk snapped from his stupor and roared. No one moved as the Hulk tore apart the titan and grabbed Doom, squeezing the man's middle and neck slowly, making him gasp for breath. Before he could do the deed, Tony flew forward and placed a hand on the Hulk's arm.
"We don't do that to our enemies," he said calmly but sternly.
Hulk snorted, continuing to glare at Doom. "Killed Spangles," he growled, squeezing tighter.
"Steve wouldn't want this," Natasha whispered over the comm.
Hulk froze before silently agreeing, Steve would never kill.
Hulk gave Doom an icy glare before he threw the demon at a garbage truck; greatly denting it. "Trash," Hulk rumbled.
No one disagreed.
Three days later, the largest collection in the history of the world of people stood before the white house as the President and military personnel gave speeches. Soldiers of all ranks and ages with their families stood there. Everyday people and reporters were there. Even villains had showed up in their orange uniform.
The bugle and accordion played Taps together slowly and without mistake. The flag was folded and given to Phil Coulson, a friend. The Avengers carried the empty coffin to the base of a memorial stature of their comrade while all sang Amazing Grace. The priest said more tears feel this day than on the day the first borns of Egypt died.
Many spoke for the man who gave his all but not a word left the Avengers' mouths. No one blamed them.
At the front of all this was a picture of one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Mightiest.
His name was Captain America.
It was dawn in a small town not far from the busy streets of Brooklyn. The Avengers were simply civilians wearing black, standing before a freshly lain slab of marble. A simple ceremony.
And it was for Steve Rogers.
"Today the world mourns their hero, Captain America. Today I mourn my friend, Steve Rogers." –Tony Stark.
End.
