Forever is a Short Time

by movieholic

As a young man, newly married, he had thought he had forever, thought he had all the time in the world to show his bride how much he loved her. It increased tenfold when he held his baby girl for the first time, and gazed into her wide, blue eyes.

"I'll always be here," he murmured into her tiny ears. "Forever."

Years later, while serving his country as a proud Marine, he had found that the world had cruelly robbed him of his family. He had wandered aimlessly into a death trap, feeling no reason to go on living any longer. And the one thought that stuck with him the whole time was that some sort of devilish fate broke his promise. He no longer had them to hold, to kiss, to cherish...they were lost forever.

Marrying three more times, he wondered how many broken promises of "Forever," had he whispered against lips. "Till death to us part," was pulled from his mouth hesitantly, for his heart still lay with his murdered family, forever. The couplings lasted months, none ever taken seriously, none lasting long, none lasting forever.

One dark morning, rain crashing down, a lone man sat in park. He looked at his hands, calloused and rough from years of hard labor, before staring at the finger that once held the promise of forever. Swallowing roughly, he stood up and glanced at the pouring Heavens, before turning up the collar of his jacket and slowly walking away.

The man realized a long time ago two things.

Forever is a short time, but the ache in his heart would be there till the day he dies.

End.
