Sam bustled in to hall, dumping bag and jacket on the floor while looking through the mail. He paused briefly at one envelope, then tossed it in the trash unopened and went into his study. Jessica, watching from another room, retrieved the envelope – a birthday card from his Dad – and snuck upstairs. She gentle placed the card in a box with the other items she had rescued from the trash, a sad collection of unopened mail and nostalgic titbits. Sighing she closed the lid and hid the box again. She hoped one day Sam would forgive her for saving them.
