A/N this is a one shot songfic for Ilane of Mindelan's point of view
Disclaimers: The song is Wide Open Spaces by Dixie Chicks, and Tammy Pierce Characters are well, Tammy Pierce's! with out further ado...
Who doesn't know what I'm talking about
Who's never left home, who's never struck out
To find a dream and a life of their own
A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone...
Ilane of Mindelan sighed. She knew that Kel was meant to do this, but still... it was so hard letting your youngest daughter go out to be the first female knight that wouldn't have to conceal her sex as Alanna the Lioness had to do. She knew Kel had been out of place at Mindelan ever since they had return from the Yamani Islands. Her sisters' in-law just aren't the same kind of people as Kel is. Kel is probably fitting in with everyone at the palace—aside form her probation. But...
Many precede and many will follow
A young girl's dream no longer hollow
It takes the shape of a place out west
But what it holds for her, she hasn't yet guessed...
Ilane stared absently out of the window. She was lonely, with her favorite daughter gone. But she also knew in her heart that Kel would make a wonderful knight and girls, and young women would follow her example and admire her reputation. Her life long dream of being a respected knight would be fulfilled...
She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes...
She traveled this road as a child
Wide eyed and grinning, she never tired
But now she won't be coming back with the rest
If these are life's lessons, she'll take this test...
Kel would be faced with taunting and such like meant to lower her self esteem from those who did not welcome change. This would most likely be one of the hardest things she would ever do in her life. But after the Yamani's—well, Ilane of Mindelan had no doubt that she would be able to deal with those...
She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes...
As her folks drive away, her dad yells, "Check the oil!"
Mom stares out the window and says, "I'm leaving my girl"
She says, It didn't seem like that long ago
When she stood there and let her own folks know...
Kel sat on her bed, stroking her many sparrow friends. The day outside was gray and rainy. She thought of the taunting that had been aimed towards her. Actually, her sponsor, Neal, had taken more offense than she had. "But I belong here!" She thought fiercely. Her mother had been a bit reluctant to agree to the plan, probably because she wasn't eager to let her youngest daughter go. But Kel needed this opportunity. She couldn't just sit around Mindelan until she got an arranged marriage! Her family needs to know...
She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes
She knows the high stakes
She knows the high stakes
She knows the high stakes
She knows the high stakes
