Hitsugaya pretended that Matsumoto was annoying. He pretended to love Hinamori. He had to spit out Hinamori's name to hold back Matsumoto's name when he confronted Ichimaru about making, "Hinamori bleed". Why did he always visit Hinamori? Because he was scared, too scared to talk to Matsumoto, too scared to laugh with her, too scared to smile at her... What would happen when Hitsugaya finally says… "I love you".
