I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.
-Mother Teresa
"Gilbert, do you love me?"
You already knew the answer that you were going to get, but it was nice to hear it. Gilbert leaned over and wrapped his arms around you.
"Of course I love you. You're the only person that can rival my awesomeness." You giggled and leaned into his chest.
That was the happiest time in your relations ship.
Then Gilbert started to drink more and more than he ever had before. He was always going out to drink and party with his friends Antonio and Francis. You didn't mind though, if it made him happy you didn't want to get in the way of that. You asked Antonio to make sure he didn't get in to much trouble though.
He would come home late at night and get up when it's late. You would never talk anymore, and when you did the conversations were short and hasty.
"Gilbert, do you love me?"
This was the first time that you had asked this when you felt nervous. You realized that you didn't know what his answer was going to be, unlike all of the other times. Gilbert looked at you, but when he saw how nervous you were his eyes softened. He wrapped his arms around you and kissed your hair, but he didn't say a word.
That night you cried yourself to sleep for the first time in years.
People started to ask why you were still with him. You would shrug at them every time, claiming that you were happy and that there was no reason to break up. You started to spend more time with friends, and what little time you spent with Gilbert seem to disappear.
"Why do you stay with him love?" Your friend Arthur asked you one day.
"I have faith." You said, Arthur sent you a confused look. You sighed but kept talking.
"I have faith in him. Faith that one day things will be like they were before. I know that if he was like that once, he can be like that again." Arthur looked skeptical, but didn't say anything
One night you had stayed up late, trying to wait up for Gilbert. You knew you had to talk him about the relationship. It was three in the morning when you fell asleep, your body finally giving out. Gilbert came home an hour later, exhausted from being out with your friends.
He stumbled up to the bed room falling onto the bed. He pulled you into his arms, burying his face into your hair. Whether he acted like it or not, he missed you.
"Es tut mir leid, libeling." He whispered. You stirred, blurrily blinking your eyes up at him.
"Gilbert, do you love me?" Even half asleep, you knew the question you had to ask.
"For as long as I am living, libeling, I will love you." You smiled at him.
You snuggled into his chest, falling into the most peaceful sleep you have had in weeks. You knew everything was going to be okay. The Gilbert you loved was back.
Translations:
"Es tut mir leid, libeling" -I'm sorry, darling.
