20 Years Later
"Daddy come on!" Shane sighed as his 14 year old daughter dragged him to yet, another blind date. Abby had died 5 years ago, and he still wasn't really over it. But Ally, ever the pessimist, had hopes for him to move on with his life.
She pushed him and looked around, "she said she would be here." She scowled as she held out her hand for Shane's debit card. He sighed handing it to her. She beamed. "Thank you. Now sit here and wait!"
He sighed as she pushed him into a large, hard leather chair. "Okay, so she said shell meet you right here so do NOT be surprised if some random chick sits down to you and starts talking to you. Okay?"
" Yes Ally." She smiled. "Good. Now Im going to buy groceries since you fail to do so you sad sack." She glared at him before walking across the street.
Shane stared at the odd patterns in the carpet waiting. "Shane?" He looked up and saw Mitchie standing there awkwardly.
"Oh um Mitchie.. What are you doing here?" She smiled softly at him. "Im your date Shane."
He looked at his shoes. The same exact, old worn tennis shoes he wore when he came in and saw Abby on the floor. Gurgling. And he saw little Ally wondering what was wrong.
She softly sat next to him. "Shane, please look at me."
"I'm sorry Mitchie. Its just. Its been a while." She nodded softly. "Yeah, try 20 years since.. never mind."
He sighed as she softly traced her worn tattoo on her forearm. His eyes followed her finger as it traced over the small words typed in blue ink.
He tore his eyes a way realizing there was a pregnant pause between the two. He rubbed his thighs and looked at her. "So... did you ever meet anyone, start a family?"
She smiled at him sadly.
"I did meet someone, but um.." She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath, "He was abusive. I ended up in the hospital with 3 broken ribs, needed 23 stitches, had a hairline fracture in my femur, and suffered from a severe concussion. I ended up pressing charges against him and I have a restraining order."
Shane stared at her. Somehow Mitchie had trailed down in the last 20 years to a path that could have killed her. "Im sorry."
She let out a soft, bitter laugh. "Everyone is sorry, just please Shane, be a friend for once and not be fucking sorry for me."
He nodded. "Okay, but what about kids?"
She let out another bitter laugh. "Another part of my crap hole life. Shane, I cant have kids. I tried for artificial insemination about 10 years ago, and they all ended either as failures are miscarriages."
He bit his tongue swallowing his apology. Her face fell. "Oh Shane, Im sorry, here I am complaining about my sorry life and I forgot about what Ally told me. Shane thats horrible."
He took in breath feeling tears sting his eyes. "Yeah."

At the end of the hour, when Shane saw Ally standing outside impatienly he sighed. "It looks like I have to go."
Mitchie stood up and hesitantly hugged Shane. "Ill see you next week?"
He smiled. "Definitely."
She smiled and softly kissed him on the cheek.
"Bye Shane."
"Bye Mitchie."
She pulled away and as he headed out to his car she interrupted him, "Oh and Shane, please promise me this time goodbye isnt for forever."
He softly smiled, "I promise Mitchie, its not for forever."
And their terrible tragedies.
Had brought them together. And would slowly, tissue would build over each small thin layer creating a light scar, binding the wound that was their relationship together forever.
But the scare made sure it would never be the same.
