Card Tricks

He got into work at his usual early hour and made his usual strong sweet coffee and sat at his usual desk and it seemed like it was going to be just another day.

With small frown on his face he pushed his hair back behind his ears and sat staring at the folder in front of him. He knew that last night he had finished up so someone had either got into work before him, or left this here from last night. He leaned back in his chair and ran long fingers over the folder and let out a small sigh. Maybe if he got this done now then he would be free to go home early? That would be unlikely. Hopefully JJ would bounce over later and tell them there was a new case. Something to get his mind hooked into. Day after day of someone else's paper work could get tedious, though he'd never admit that to anyone.

A sip of coffee. Still no one else had arrived and so he flipped open the plain folder to see what was inside.

A frown. It was empty apart from a small red envelope. For a while Spencer just sat there looking at it. It wasn't what he had expected and at first he thought it had been put on the wrong desk, but his name was printed across the front. It looked like it had been printed out on an office printer. From just sitting looking at it there wasn't a lot he could tell. A pair of blue latex gloves was quickly taken from his desk drawer and slipped over his hands and then he leaned in closer to look.

SPENCER

Was all it said on the front. He picked up a pen from the desk and used it to flip the envelope over. The back was plain, but the envelope had been sealed shut.

Another frown and he picked up the envelope. He shook it. He inhaled it. He ran fingers over his name and then grabbed his letter opener from the desk tidy and slid it into the gap and cut open the top edge. Opener returned. Envelope sitting on the desk looking at him. Now what? Nothing bad had happened. No explosions. No noxious gasses. Nothing.

He picked it up and held it carefully by the bottom edge and watched with curiosity as a small bit of card about four inches square slipped out and onto the folder on the desk. Yet another frown. This also had writing on it. Tiny writing, but leaning forward a bit more he was able to make it out. Handwriting this time. Very fancy cursive writing and it said simply "happy valentines day"

'Ah'

His voice not much more than a whisper. This wasn't something he really wanted Morgan to discover and the bit of white card was in his hand and he was looking closer before he really thought what he was doing. The writing was very familiar and he ran his blue shod fingers carefully over it. Slowly he turned it over in his hand and looked at the back. A number was written on it "18" was all it said.

A smile slowly spread over Spencer's face as he lifted the bit of card up closer so he could inhale the soft but musky scent left on the card. He closed his eyes and just sat there for a short while with a silly grin on his face before slipping it back into the envelope and then placing the envelope into his messenger bag; stuffing it deep down in case prying eyes saw.

'You'll get your valentines present later.' He said quietly to himself.
