Clary was getting late for work. She grabbed her bag from the chair and rushed towards the door when she heard the landline ringing in the dining room. She glanced at her watch it was her first day at her new job and she didn't want to be late but then curiosity got the better of her and cursing under her breath she rushed to her dining room and picked up the phone.
In a hurried voice she asked who it was, not knowing that in a few seconds her whole life would come crashing down.
The man on the other side spoke with a heavy, hoarse voice, full of regret and grief but still professional somehow.
'Excuse me ma'am but your husband, Chief Herondale died in an encounter.'
The nest few words were blurry. She didn't realize when the phone dropped from her hand and when tears started pouring down her face. It all happened so suddenly that she couldn't wrap her head around it.
The man she so dearly loved, her best friend who promised to stay by her no matter what happened, the husband who spoke the vows with her and the father of her unborn baby, dead. No it can't be right. Its all a joke, a big fat lie.
She felt like she couldn't breath, as if the air had been sucked out of her lungs. After god knows how long she finally gathered herself in one piece and picked up the phone and placed it back on its stand again, not caring, bothering to check if the person was still on the other end or not.
She continued her day like nothing ever happened, like the love of her life wasn't just snatched from her. She came back and wore her husband's shirt which still hung loosely on her tiny frame apart from her 5 months baby bump she had.
Not caring about the talks happening right outside her bedroom door. The talks which were trying to decide her and her baby's fate.
She just grabbed his pillow and held it tightly against her body, inhaling her husband's scent from it. Silent tears escaped her eyes and just like that she fell into a deep slumber with memories of her and her husband fresh in her mind as if it was only today.
