What do we stand for?

Kate opened the door to see Castle standing there. She was shocked to see him because of late and only noticed that he was in the apartment when their shoulders touched.

"You need to help me understand Beckett" Castle said as Kate shut the door and walked into the lounge room where he was now standing.

"What do you mean?" Kate asked confused but kept her voice strong. She would not show weakness.

"I mean what do we stand for?" Castle asked looking her straight in the eyes. "You flirt with me, you hold my hand, we almost die together and you kiss me. Why do you keep stringing me along?"

"Stringing you along Castle, what do you mean?" Kate said, her heart sinking to her stomach.

"You string me along thinking there may actually be something there but there isn't. Do you just want me to follow you around like a puppy for the rest of your life?" He said pointing to her, his eyes blazing with hurt and anger. "You know how I feel about you and you just use it so I'll keep following you. Well I'm sorry Beckett but no more. No more will I look like the fool. I will not sit here and be used by someone who clearly doesn't feel the same way."

Kate's eyes prickled with unshed tears and her heart now dropping all the way to the ground. "Is that what you think?" she said through an abnormally high voice. He didn't think she loved him? How couldn't he see it, it was in her eyes every time she looked at him.

"That's what I know" He said sternly. "You remember everything from the day you were shot, everything! You heard me say I love you yet you told me you didn't remember and I didn't hear from you for 3 months! I watched you die in that ambulance, I watched the one person I loved over everything, would do anything for, die. But when you came to, you lied to me and told me you didn't remember. It would have been easier on both of us if you would have told me you remembered and told me you didn't love me. At least then we both would have been able to move on but no, you had to lie about it. Why? Why not tell me the truth?"

She had let a few tears slip by accident after he was done. He was right, she remembered everything and had lied to him about it, but not for the reasons he was thinking. She had just been shot and was healing. As she was lying on the ground bleeding, she had heard the words she longed to hear from his mouth, she would have said something back but she lost consciousness just after that. He must have taken her silence as an answer because he moved back towards the door. He stopped as he opened the door and turned back to look at her.

"I can't follow you around anymore. I hope you find your happiness" He said.

"Castle…" Kate said in a half-plead half-sob voice.

"Goodbye Kate" And with that he closed the door leaving her to stand in the middle of her lounge room, crying. She crumpled on to the floor in a heap, sobs filling the air and wracking her body. She sat there for a long time just repeating the same words over and over again.

"I love you Castle" Knowing he wouldn't hear it, that he was too far away and didn't even care anymore.

A/N: This popped into my head the other day. It's not what I usually write but I thought I'd give it a shot. Review if you would like to.
