The inspiration for this one came from a post by Ave-Aria on Tumblr!

Rating: T

Pairing(s): Makorra

Word Count: ~500

Summary: For Korra, the breakup was expected. In fact, she had been dreading it.

She knew this would happen. Varrick's speedboat could not possibly take her faster or farther from Republic City than she willed. Away from the people who refused to help, and away from him more importantly.

Korra took a hand off the wheel to wipe with her forearm at the tears that stubbornly refused to stop since she ran out of the Republic City Police Headquarters. She seldom cried, and never around others. So to mention that she could not control herself as she tried to save any shred of her dignity, (at least any that was left from being a terrible Avatar), running away from Mako and his colleagues. She barely managed to put on a steely façade long enough to have Varrick hand over the keys and give her the dock location.

She wished she could say that scenarios where Mako broke it off with her had not crossed her mind. In fact, a little corner of her mind had dreamed up multiple possibilities and with increasing frequency. It had started as a small seed, a nagging worry that cropped up soon after they got together. It just seemed inevitable. So why wait then? Korra would get a bit more defensive, fight back a little more, and refuse to budge just a hair longer than usual. Why let time do the legwork?

Explain why my boyfriend stabbed me in the back?

Look, the President of the Republic asked me a direct question. What was I supposed to do?

You betrayed me, and my family!

Korra winces; perhaps she should have airbended his desk roughly to the side like that.

Enough! Look, I have a job to do! I can't constantly be worrying about keeping you from making another huge mistake!

That was the blow she was waiting for. He might have enjoyed her company but in the end she was just an obstacle. In the end, Korra knew she had to be honest with herself. She was a rebound.

Well, I have a job to do too, only it seems like you're always standing in the way of me getting it done!

Well, I guess if we're both putting our jobs first, maybe there's no room for our relationship!

Her heart dropped now even thinking about how the words rolled from his lips. In her mind, it simply reinforced that he had tossed the phrase around in his head before the moment of release. There really wasn't room for a relationship between them. Being a moderately incompetent Avatar took up most of her time, and his goals of advancing up the hierarchical ladder under Beifong was starting to consume more time than she had originally bargained for.

Why wouldn't he? He broke up with Asami when he seemed to love her.

Maybe that's just how he was. Maybe it was better this way.

Korra didn't know, but she knew she had to reach the Fire Nation before it was too late.

Hate to say it but more angst on the way after that episode.

Reviews are much appreciated; I'm a bit rusty as it's been a while since I published.
