It was only five in the morning when Cristina heard the door of her bedroom open. She reached over to where her husband was lying, making sure he was still there. That had become a habit of hers ever since Jackson had gotten into an accident after being paged at night. Cristina had only found out when he wasn't in her bed anymore. Now, however, he was still in a peaceful slumber.
"Mommy?" She heard from the little girl standing in the doorway. "Yes sweetie?" she replied. "I can't sleep." Cristina patted the mattress as a sign for her to come lie between her parents. It still amazed her how Alexis Avery, now four years old, climbed on her bed with such ease. The first time her daughter stood next to her bed was when she was two years old and had managed to climb out of her crib all by herself. Jackson had laughed and said their little girl had gotten her mother's determination.
Cristina pulled her daughter close to her body and waited for her breathing to become heavier, to go to sleep again. The two most important people in her life were lying in her bed right now. Safe and well and that was all that mattered tonight.
