Treasure
Legolas was looking around him – he was in the treasury of his father´s. Diamonds and gold were shining everywhere around him all trying to outshine each other.
"Lord Elrond, I have never thought about it before but which one of these pieces of jewelry is the most valuable? Which one is the most important based on its history and which one is the most valuable?"
Elrond glanced at Legolas before turning and calmly pointing at one necklace resting on luxurious cushions.
"Those positions are held by the same piece my prince. It is that one."
Legolas followed the line Elrond was pointing at. When he got sight of the thing his eyes widened and he dropped the golden cup he had been holding.
"But – that's the one I used to play with as a child. I kept it in the same box as my wooden toys!"
There was mirth in Elrond´s eyes as he watched the elven prince.
"Indeed you did."
"But…why would father let me play with something so precious?"
"Because you took a liking to it at the first glance." Was the instant answer delivered like it should have been an obvious fact.
"But I even wore it while playing in the woods. Did he really treasure it even back then?" asked Legolas his eyes still kept captive by the shimmering necklace.
"Yes he did and still does. Your father transferred the thing here when you forgot about it and the other of your toys."
"Isn't that a little contradictory to be so carefree of something so precious?" asked Legolas finally turning to look at the other elf in the eyes.
"Not to your father. To lend his words; he preferred to have all his most valuable treasures in the same place."
"In my room? What else was in there?" asked Legolas while frowning. Elrond waited but the prince remained looking puzzled.
"That piece of jewelry – and you."
Legolas looked shocked – and very much like his father had as a young man cradling a newborn baby and newborn understanding. Elrond smiled and passed by the baffled prince who he could still see in his mind doing the most ridiculous things to the necklace under Thranduil´s watchful and disbelieving gaze. The older elf stopped to make sure he was understood before resuming his walk and leaving the vault;
"Never in that order. You are the treasure of this kingdom - and every elf under the King´s command knows that."
When Elrond had left the room Legolas was left alone in the middle of all the riches. He turned slowly on his spot looking at all the shimmering around him. It was quite dazzling, the sight – but not as dazzling as the knowledge.
The knowledge that he had out-shined all those treasures the instant he had first opened his eyes.
It´s my first try with lord of the rings – maybe be a darling and leave a comment at your wake?
Whispers; Hey – is Elrond actually called a "Lord"? I just realized I don't really know. I haven't read the books and have absolutely no intention of going anywhere near the English version any time soon. If you could please tell me - thanks.
