Chapter 1

I stood in the crowd of the reaping filled with anticipation, not wanting to hear my name. I could hear my heart beating fast as the escort for District 5 moved her hand above the names in the bowl. I closed my eyes. I'm nervous for no reason I thought, it's a small chance of me being chosen. "Finch Crossley." The Escorts voice boomed across the town square. Everyone started backing away from me, making room for me to get passed. I slowly started moving up towards the stage. My palms were sweating. I was really nervous. I stood on the stage. I saw my father all the way at the back. He was crying. I felt a tear trickle down my face. I shouldn't cry I thought, it will make me seem weak. The escort called out the male tributes name but I didn't pay much attention. I was busy thinking. This might be the last time I ever see my father. I'm all he has. The peacekeepers took the both of us into the justice building to say our final goodbyes. I walked into the room and sat down on the filthy couch. I burst into tears. I'll never win, I'm not prepared. My father rushed in and gave me hug. "It will be alright." He kept on telling me. We sat together crying and not saying a word. The peacekeepers came in and took him out. I was going to miss him. A few minutes later they came back ready to take me to the train station. When we arrived at the train station I looked amongst the crowd hoping to see my father but I was unsuccessful. When I walked through the doors of the train it was the most beautiful thing. I have never seen so much food in my entire life. I walked over to the window and looked outside. Goodbye District 5 I thought, I'll never see you again.
