The Willow Tree
I can hear the gunshots. One man dead, another. I am clutching my sister's hand, "Heidi" she whispers "I want to go home!" "Shhh!" I reply "They might hear us!" We are in the middle of our home town – Munich. The gestapo are coming to get us! We are jews – They dont like jews. Suddenly we hear some talking, we shuffle closer to our corner. "Gestapo! it's the Gestapo! come out or we will come in!" they shout. I can hear planes! they are coming nearer and nearer, and the bomb drops - everyone screams.
"Halga! Halga!" I scream, desperately trying to find my 7 year old sister. It is nearly impossible, dust, bricks and fire are everywhere! "Heidi?" I hear faintly "Halga?!" I run towards the sound of her voice and there she is amongst the rubble. "Quick! I've hurt my leg, it's stuck under these bricks! Help me get it out!" I desperately scrabble with her leg until it is free "Now what?" Halga asks "We need to get out of here!"
We both start running, passed the fallen school, passed the burning houses, passed the battered shops until we reach the church, then the gunshot starts again, it gets closer and closer and closer. I push Halga into the corner, but the gestapo are coming, they are going to get us, they are going to kill us.
