EMBRACE
CHAPTER 1: Letter
Korra felt her heart clench as she ran, it was hurting. She had barely breathed as she rushed to her master's hut. But that wasn't the cause of this pain, it was the reason—that agonizing and yet inevitable reason—why she was running in the first place.
"Master Katara." She huffed as she gripped the thick pelt that separated the interior of the igloo from the outside, and pushed it sideways to make way for herself. Korra froze at that position however as she saw her.
Korra felt like she was going to lose her footing. The strong woman she had for a master was not crying—at least without tears, but the way her shoulders slumped. A part of her wanted to give the woman space but the other—larger—part of her told her to stay.
She sat down beside the woman and held her shoulder, gently but firmly, and her eyes ended up on the letter resting pitifully on Katara's lap.
"May I?"
Katara did not answer, but she didn't refuse either. Korra gently took the familiar-looking parchment from her old friend's crippling palm.
Her eyes widened and she held her mentor, mother, and honorary grandmother for an embrace. Korra's hand held the letter the same way Katara did. It was odd, she had heard of the news—which made her rush to Katara, the one most affected by it in all of the North Pole—but only now did it truly sink in. That sinking feeling one felt when you realize how it affected you, too, and a moment wherein you would feel there was nothing else to do but cry.
The letter was from the Fire Lord, Ursa. Only she didn't sound like the monarch of the most powerful nation in the world—she sounded like a young girl in need of a friend.
Katara,
Father passed away.
Please come and see him go by our side.
Your Dear Ursa.
Korra had personally known the former Fire Lord and admired the man greatly—be it from stories she heard from history books or from him, himself. Her heart cried for the people he left, and she cried at the realization that she wouldn't ever hear his stories from him again.
The Fire nation, and the world, would be grieving for a long time—as it did with Avatar Aang, and the masters Toph and Sokka. Ursa, now without the guidance of her father, would need all the support she could get. There was him, who was probably the one who idolized the late Zuko most his whole life…
And then there was the woman beside her, the broken woman Korra would always see as family—Katara: now the last member of the former, albeit certainly not less, Team Avatar.
Korra sighed and sat beside her master, silently, thinking she could trade her avatar powers to comfort the ones she loved, even for just one day.
