Partners

John Casey has had six partners in his life. Four men, two women. Five of them are dead.

"Casey!" Her voice breaks into his thoughts. "I can't let you stay here." Her ice blue eyes are regretful, but steady.

He follows her reluctantly and then watches her hurry off, her blonde curls bouncing. He knows that she's off to save the day. Because that's what she's best at.

He goes back to the BuyMore. He goes back to the place where he once worked for a cover, worked because he was serving a greater purpose. Now he works there because he has nowhere else to go.

He knows that Walker will manage to rescue Shaw and the idiot. Because she's more than just good at what she does, she's amazing. He never trusted anybody like he trusted Sarah Walker. He still trusts her. Not that it matters anymore.

He ignores the idiots in the BuyMore. Bartowski really is the best of them, as much as it pains him to admit it.

Chuck Bartowski may be the best of the idiots, but Casey knows he's still an idiot. But now he's the one who serves the bigger purpose and Casey's just some loser who works at a BuyMore. Things have reversed themselves. If Casey was a different sort of person, he might have found the irony almost funny.

Casey moves around a fridge and goes back into the break room. He sits at a table by himself and doesn't speak. People are afraid to look over at him.

He understands why Bartowski and Shaw are both obsessed with his partner. His former partner. She's fearless, she's beautiful, she's a good shot. If she was his type he knows that he'd chase her right beside them.

But she's not his type. So he watches as the idiots chase her. He knows she loves Bartowski. He knows that Shaw's just a distraction. But he also knows his partner is confused. She thinks that Bartowski killed the mole. And he knows she though that he'd never do it.

He's watched the two of them, Bartowski and Walker, for over two years now. He's seen there delicate dance of yes and no's, will and won'ts. He knew that she was falling for him a long time ago, mere months after they'd met. He'd charmed her accidentally with his idiotic tendencies and his insecure smiles. And Bartowski would have to be ten times the idiot he already was not to fall for Walker.

They'd been in love months ago, before the idiot had re-intersected. After that, they'd gone south. Casey didn't know why and he didn't really want to know why. He was sure there was some sort of treason involved on somebody's part.

But now, Walker was falling again. Casey could see it. She was trying to use Shaw as a distraction against Bartowski. It wasn't working.

He sighs and feels guilty. He feels something like regret pulling at his insides. He has felt what the kid and Walker were feeling.

He needs to tell Walker the truth. She's the best God damn partner he's ever had. He at least owes her the truth.

He gets up and decides to go tell her right them. She's bound to be done saving Bartowski. Because, at the end of the day, that's what she's good at.
