He couldn't believe it. He was back. After everything he went through to get off that bloody piece of land and to find Penny, none of it mattered now. His son didn't even exist and who knew if he ever would? He was angry and confused. He had no idea how this happened. One minute he's enjoying dinner in his boat with Penny and Charlie, and the next a flash of bright white light snatches him from his home and dumps him back here. Eloise told him the Island wasn't done with him yet. Is this what she meant? Did she know this would happen?
Since Desmond had reappeared in the hatch he knew all too well, he had taken to drinking Dharma beer from the food pantry while blasting his records as loud as possible, trying to numb the pain that was gnawing and clawing at his heart. He slurred the lyrics of every song, even if he didn't know it, obnoxiously loud until his throat was sore, then he would lounge on the couch and drink quietly.
He hadn't thought much of what was going on above him and currently he couldn't care less. The only thing that clarified what date it was the fact that when he appeared in the hatch, the system failure Egyptian symbols that shown black and red on the timer were just leaving and turning back to count 108 all over again. He had turned the fail safe key to save the world from destruction. In the hours that passed, it was a wonder he had been able to type the numbers while under the influence of his drinking.
As the sun sank and Desmond finished what he decided would temporarily be his last can of beer, he rose unsteadily from the couch and stumbled to kitchen sink, grabbing a clean glass on the way. His throat was coarse and dry from shouting and consuming so much alcohol. He sloppily poured himself a glass of water and inhaled a swig. Water trickled from the corners of his mouth and dripped to the collar of his Dharma jumpsuit. When the glass was empty, he threw it down on the counter, cracking the 30-year-old glass on impact. Then Desmond snatched an Apollo bar from the pantry, along with another beer, and cradled them to the couch. After plopping down upon it, he tried setting the can on the coffee table, but his vision was so hazy that he missed his target and his precious drink fell to the hardwood floor, rolling away from him. Desmond cursed under his intoxicated breath but let it go, unwrapping the candy viciously. When he finished eating, he tossed the wrapper at the ground and fell asleep just after mumbling, "Penny."
