Over the Phone
A/N: I do not own FullMetal Alchemist in any shape or form. If I did, Riza and Roy would have little Royai babies.
The shrill sound of the phone woke Riza from her sound slumber.
She pushed her thin brows together and groaned into her pillow, which she held closely to her chest. It was getting cold outside and her malfunctioning furnace wasn't helping that cause.
Once again, the phone rang loud through her apartment. Why she even had one, she had no idea. Riza wasn't very social when it comes to other women, and it was rare that she would call in sick. Well, not even rare. It was unheard of.
Riza reached out towards the ringing machine, eyes still glued shut. After a few misses, her fingers brushed across the phone. Picking it up, she held it to her ear. "...Hello?" she murmured.
"...L...Lieutenant?"
He was crying. Riza could immediately identify that they were drunken sobs. "Colonel...? Why are you calling?" she pushed herself up onto her elbows and checked the time. "It's almost three... in the morning." the displeasure in her voice was clear.
"...Laura left."
Riza groaned mentally. Laura was his current arm candy he had been rambling on about to everyone. Apparently not anymore. "I'm sorry, sir."
He choked through the phone. It was obvious he'd had more than a few drinks. "I thought we'd be together... at least a little bit longer..." Riza could hear him wipe his nose. "It was only a week... what do I do Lieutenant?"
"I don't know sir."
It went quiet for a while. Riza could hear his unsteady breathing through the phone. Slowly, he started to calm down. Occasionally, his breath would hitch. At least the sobbing had stopped.
"...Are you still there?"
"Yes sir." she replied. She wasn't lying down anymore. Instead, she had relocated to the end of the bed, closer to the heat. A thick blanket wrapped around her slender body. She really should dress heavier at night. "Are you feeling better?"
Roy waited a few seconds before answering. "I suppose."
"Good." she held in a yawn, not wanting to insult him. He wasn't boring her. It's just hard to appear wide awake this early. Instead, she sighed softly. "Can you sleep? We have work tomorrow."
"Yes." he said. He sounded a little better. "Thank you Lieutenant."
"No problem sir." she proceeded to lower the phone. Though, before it hit the receiver, she heard a voice. Quickly, she brought it back to her ear. "I'm sorry sir? I didn't hear you."
A tired laugh flowed into her ears. It wasn't the typical Mustang laugh. "Nothing... I was just saying good night."
Riza let herself smile. "You too. Good night Colonel."
Content with her work, Riza clicked the phone onto the receiver.
Roy smiled, eyes looking over the phone, still in his hands. Calling Riza, he was expecting an angry talking to for calling so late. Especially about another woman.
He laughed under his breath and placed the phone down.
Good thing Laura was out of the picture.
