Xerxes Break wasn't a sentimental sort of man. So he really didn't see any need to accompany young Gilbert all the way into his new home. And, the red-eyed man thought to himself, the adopted child he really wanted to see right now was already outside. The unlikely escort grinned as he leaned against his carriage. His single eye followed the young Nightray as he skipped through the yard. The blonde-haired boy felt the attention on himself though and turned. His mix-matched eyes found Break—he smiled. The young Nightray abandoned what he was doing and strode over to the unknown visitor. Something that could have easily passed for childlike-innocence shone from those mix-matched eyes. But Break knew better.
"Ah, so you must be young master Vincent." The silver-haired man crouched down. Red eye was level with red eye; golden eye was level with hair. "I'm Xerxes Break." That not-so-believable smile crept on the child's face again. "I brought your brother here with me." Xerxes saw something genuine in those unique eyes for the first time.
"Gilbert!" Vincent peered around the red-eyed visitor. His face fell when he realized Gilbert wasn't really with this man. "You lied." The boy's red eye gleamed; Xerxes smirked.
"Oh no I didn't, little one. Gilbert's already inside." The gleam turned into something possessive. This was the kid, Xerxes was sure of it. Besides, how many kids could have two different coloured eyes?
"Say Vincent, you look awfully familiar." Xerxes grinned at the child. This had to be the same boy—this had to be the boy from the abyss. "Maybe it's because your eye looks just like your brother's." Vincent gave the older man a half-smile.
"And the other one looks just like Mister Break's." The blonde boy leaned in closer. "We both have such lonely red eyes too." Vincent causally moved Xerxes's hair from his face. His golden eye was level with an empty socket. Xerxes eye widened in shock. So this kid recognized him, too. Vincent's half-smile grew. "Tch, she just got one. She's always been so useless." The kid began to laugh; Xerxes remained in shock. This kid wasn't normal, he couldn't be.
"So you remember too?" Vincent cocked his head to the side.
"Remember what, Mister Break?" Xerxes, now not completely sure if he was really awake, reached out for Vincent. But they were interrupted.
"Young Master Vincent! Young Master, you're brother's here!" That genuine look returned to the mix-matched eyes.
"Nii-san!" Vincent gave Xerxes one last half smile before running off. The older man moved his hair back in place and stood up. It looked like he'd be keeping a close eye on the adopted Nightray sons from now on. Kids these days just cause much too much trouble, Xerxes thought. The man grinned to himself, popped a candy in his mouth, and slid back into his carriage.
"I can't wait to see those kids all grown up. What treasures they're sure to be."
