Sanctuary

It did not matter to him, whether the girls like him or not. No, that was not it, it did not matter whether other girls liked him or not, the only girl that mattered was her. For as long as he could remember, she was always there for him. But he knew it was not so, for she had only entered his life when they were children, when their parents married.

The first time he saw her, she did not look like much. She was a short girl with a chubby face and bright green eyes. She was always hiding behind her father, shying away when he approached to greet her, burying her face into the deep folds of her father's shirt. He was put off by her timid behaviour, and constantly picked on her, just so she would pay attention to him, after all, their parents would only have eyes for each other.

He did not like the feeling of being tossed aside. He wasn't exactly tossed aside, he was well cared for by his mother and step-father, but the feeling of loneliness always surfaced whenever he saw his mother smiling so brightly at that man, his step-father. It was not only loneliness, but also jealousy. He wished that it was him that his mother showered her love towards, but it had to be his step-father that had that honour.

His step-sister had always been unusually quiet when they first met, but she slowly became more loud and rambunctious as the years passed. At first, he only put it off as her adjusting to family life with new family members in the house. It was only recently that he realized why she had changed so much. It was due to his mother's sudden death.

He always bullied her to the point where she was constantly crying for their parents. It had seemed pathetic that she was such a cry baby, but that didn't matter to him at the time. All that mattered to him was making himself feel better about himself. His mother's death had quietened him down, he was on the point of breaking. It was her, his step-sister who had went and comforted him in his time of need.

She took on the role of the responsible and elderly sister, even though she was younger by two months. She constantly took care of him, talking to him, joking with him and listening to him. She had become a beacon of hope, of light for him. She was his sanctuary when he needed help, when he needed comfort. Her bright smiles directed at him made him feel better, and her laugh had him smiling.

Slowly, she had become what his world revolved around. She was the one to bring him out of the darkness, and he would protect her from those who mean her harm. To him, she was the most important person in his life. She kept him going in the depressing times, she was his lifeline. His sanctuary.

"Martin, what are you spacing out for?" a feminine voice asked from above his head. Martin looked up into deep emerald eyes softly reflecting his face. He grinned up at her, "Oh, nothing at all Di. Come on, the Center's calling."

Martin hurriedly stood up and dashed over to a statue, finding the entrance to the Center. He smiled and mock bowed at Diana, "After you, milady."

"Really Martin, what's up with you today?" sighed Diana as she walked through the portal. Martin smiled at his step-sister's retreating back, "Nothing. Nothing at all."

Yes, she was his sanctuary.
