AN:This takes place after Maria comes to stay with the Von Trapps, but other than that, it doesn't really follow the movie at all. May do a follow-up scene with the children if enough people want me to, so R&R please!

Brigitta is defiant

Father enters, pours a glass of wine, and blows on the whistle.

All the children enter, except Brigitta.

Father

Hello, Liesel, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta – Brigitta? Where is she? Oh well – hello, Marta, and finally, hello Gretl. Now where is Brigitta? I'll call her again.

Father blows the whistle again. Nothing happens.

Louisa

She won't come unless you call her name, father.

Father

Sorry, Louisa. I didn't catch that. Say it again.

Louisa

She won't come, Father, unless you call her name.

Father

Nonsense. Aside mind you nothing happened, did it?

Oh very well, then

Brigitta!!!

Brigitta

Coming, Father!

Brigitta marches in.

Father

Brigitta, where have you been? Shut the door, then get into line. I wish to talk to you.

Brigitta shuts the door, but stands defiantly alone, facing her father.

Father

Now, Brigitta, why were you late to roll call? All the others were here.

Explain yourself.

Brigitta

I was late, because I'm sick and tired of coming running when you whistle, like a dog!!

Father

What? I don't treat you like dogs, do I, children?

Brigitta

You do! You don't mean to, but you do! You brush us all aside, except for Friedrich - you let him come to your side, but even that's only rarely.

As for us others, I do believe you barely even know we exist! For example, did you know I still play the recorder?

Father

Really? You still play?

I thought I'd forbidden music in this house years ago.

Brigitta

Shall I show you? I'll go and get it. Liesel, Louisa, warm up your voices!

Brigitta runs out, then re-enters, clutching her recorder, and a music book. She opens it, and counts 1-2-3-4

Liesel and Louisa

As the blackbird in the spring 'neath the willow tree…

They quickly finish.

Brigitta

See what I mean? You do brush us aside. I remember how we used to have grand times – you, Mother, Louisa, Liesel, Friedrich, Kurt and I.

You were so playful and loving. I want that Father back. Marta and Gretl have never known you like that. They ought to get to know that side of you too – not just the strict, angry side. They want to be loved – for God's sake, Gretl no longer speaks, except to Fraulein Maria, who's the only adult who's shown them a mite of love in their entire LIVES!!!

Brigitta runs out.

Father

Follow her, all of you. I need space to think

All children

Yes father.

They run off. Soon…

Father

Liesel! Friedrich! Louisa! Kurt! Brigitta! Marta! Gretl!

Come on down!

The children stand, stunned!

Brigitta

Yes! Come on everyone!

They run in. Brigitta grabs Gretl, and swings her into father's lap

Gretl

Whee!

Father

Children, I've been thinking. I shall stop going to Vienna so often, and I'll get rid of that silly whistle. But, first, what shall we do now?

Liesel

Why don't we sing together? I brought down your guitar, Father.

Father

Good idea, Liesel. Let me just tune it… Right. Brigitta, why don't you start us off?

Brigitta

Edelweiss…

Edelweiss…

Every morning you greet me

Father and Brigitta

Small and white

Clean and bright

All

You look happy to meet me…

They sing edelweiss twice through. Father then puts down his guitar.

Father

All children

Well done, everyone. I haven't enjoyed myself so much in years. Thank you Brigitta, for alerting me to what I was doing. Now, off to bed, the lot of you.

Yes father. Goodnight .

Father

Goodnight my Liesel, my Friedrich, my Louisa, my Kurt, my Brigitta, my Marta, and, of course, my little Gretl.

They kiss their father. Brigitta takes Marta's hand, Liesel takes Gretl's and they run off, upstairs.

The end
