Broken
A/N: Well, it's been a while... a very long while. I know and I apologize for it. You guys deserve an authoress who doesn't get caught up in life and gets something new out every week, at least, but I am, unfortunately, not perfect. But, to cheer you up, this is dedicated to you. That's right, you. Enjoy it; you deserve it. (And Melissa, because I was, oddly enough, inspired by her latest fiction, Chains.)
Disclaimer: It's quite another unfortunate thing, but I don't own Naruto or Sasuke or anyone, for that matter.
…the ties are broken… and so are the hearts…. especially his…
He feels her touch and flips around, ready to give her his famous smirk and watch her squeal with delight. But she isn't there. No one is, but the wind and himself, and his ridiculously guilty conscience. He pulls the thin shirt closer to his body, and tries not to shiver. Uchihas don't shiver.
He tries to ignore the way he feels. Like he's done something wrong. It's not like he wanted to break the ties; he needed too. Kakashi, Naruto, her, they were all dragging him down. The dull, hollow ache in his chest had nothing to do with what he had done. Nope, not at all.
"I won't run away anymore... I won't go back on my word... that is my ninja way!"
"All I've been doing is watching you two from behind... now, get a good look at my back!"
"Hello students, today I got lost on the road of life."
He looks around, trying to figure out where these voices from his past have come from. He could almost see Naruto's grin. It looked like a glimpse of Kakashi's eye in the trees. And her, her, it was like she was there, following him, her pink hair floating, her giggle trailing behind him, her green eyes piercing into his soul. He felt dirty. Why was Kami trying to punish him? He hadn't done anything wrong….
Wait. Oh. Yeah. He abandoned his village. He broke ties, but he broke hearts too. He was an avenger, that's what avengers did. They left everything behind so they could fulfill their duty.
The voice of his brother fills his head, "You aren't even worth killing, foolish little brother. If you want to kill me, despise me, hate me, and live in an unsightly way... Run, and cling to life, and then some day, when you have the same eyes as I do, come before me."
He didn't have his brothers eyes. He hadn't killed Naruto. Maybe the ties weren't as severed as he thought they were. But it's not like he had gone back with the dobe. No, he was to kill Itachi without those tainted eyes.
As he pulled his shirt tighter, he couldn't help but notice the wind had died down. Then, why was he so cold? Regrets flooded his mind. Leaving her. Leaving the dobe. Leaving Team 7. Leaving them all.
So this must be his punishment. Kami was letting him punish himself, harder and harder, while memories ravaged at the supposedly sane parts of his mind. He was inflicting the same punishment on himself that he had given everyone else he had ever known.
And now, he was broken too.
The wind picked back up, and Uchiha Sasuke walked away, leaving nothing but his footprints in the dirt.
…and he was broken too…
A/N: Alright, you all know what to do. Hit the button that says 'Review' and obey it. Hope you enjoyed this, and hopefully, I can get some holiday ficlets up. Toodles, my adoring public and my lovely piece of artwork known as the Mona Lissa.
