Smile

Disclaimer: I don't own RWBY.

Velvet enjoyed her photo sessions. It filled her with a childish glee and let her forget about the world around her. A staff here, a sword there, two emerald eyes staring right into the lens.

"Hi, Velvet!" Velvet jumped as the ginger who had appeared right in front of her spoke up.

"Oh, Penny, you startled me!"

Penny frowned. "Oh no, I'm sorry. I certainly did not mean to scare you."

Velvet smiled at the girl's sudden change in mood. "It's fine, Penny. I was just surprised, is all."

And like that, the smile returned to Penny's face as she looked down at Velvet's camera. "What are you doing?"

"Just working on my photography," Velvet answered as she showed Penny her pictures.

Penny gasped. "They're wonderful!"

Velvet laughed. She knew her photos needed work, but she also knew that Penny was being absolutely honest. Somehow, the ginger managed to find joy in everything she did. Velvet loved that about her. "Thank you. I'm glad you like them," she said as she handed Penny the camera, who happily looked through all the pictures.

After a moment, Velvet decided to change the subject. "Have you spoken to Ruby recently?"

Once again, Penny's smile was replaced by a frown. "Yes," she answered dejectedly. "She's...not pretty upset. Which I understand, given what happened with Yang. I just...can't believe she would do that. I mean, yes, I saw it with my eyes, but I still can't believe it."

"I know what you mean. Yang never seemed like the kind of person to attack someone who couldn't defend themselves. But, you saw how heated the fight got. Under stress and adrenaline, you often wind up seeing things that aren't there."

"I guess." There was a moment of silence before Penny smiled again. "Anyway, Ruby said that she was going to go to the arena and that she would cheer for me if I fought today."

Velvet nodded. "I'll be sure to do the same. Now that my teammates are out, you will have my full support."

Penny beamed and threw herself onto Velvet, hugging her tightly. "I love you, Velvet."

"I love you, too, Penny," Velvet said as she hugged her girlfriend.

"I can't wait to fully transfer to Beacon and spend more time with you."

"How are you planning on doing that anyway?"

"You'll see. I've got a plan."

Velvet just smiled as Penny nuzzled into her neck. Then, she lifted up her camera and took a picture of the two of them.

"If I fight today," Penny started as she broke the hug, "be sure to take a picture of me after my victory!"

"Of course."

Penny then pulled her in for a deep kiss. "I've got to go now," she said after breaking it, looking into Velvet's eyes. "See you in the arena?"

Velvet smiled. "To take your picture."

Penny smiled and gave her another hug before leaving.

Velvet returned to taking photos.

She'd be sure to take Penny's picture, whether she won or lost. She knew her girlfriend would be smiling.

No matter the outcome.
