I had been driving for over two hours, the radio station was getting not only repetitive, but fuzzy, I had a cramp in my leg, and I needed food and a restroom. I took a left into the Safeway parking lot, after many botched attempts at navigating Port Angeles. The sky was beginning to dim, but the streetlights hadn't switched on yet. My eyesight was terrible as it was, so twilight was easily my least favorite time of day.
After I exited the store with meager supplies for my week at the cabin, I was still feeling the cramp in my leg, so I decided to take a quick walk around the block. I pulled my sweater more tightly around me, enjoying the feel of the cold air against my face. I reached the edge of the parking lot, quickly jumped over the bordering shrubbery and onto the sidewalk.
I was always a fast walker, so I was almost back to where I started when I heard a voice behind me. I tensed up, gripping my keys tightly, and kept walking. The voice chimed again, "Hey come on, you're not gonna say hi back?"
I spared a quick glance over my shoulder, cursing my bad luck for having crossed paths with these idiots. There were two men, probably a few years older than my 19 years. The one harassing me was three or four yards behind me and walking towards me. The other one was hanging farther back, waiting for his friend to return.
"Roy, seriously? Let's go?"
"Nah man wait a minute." Roy yells back to his friend.
"Hey. Hey! You can't just walk away from me!"
"I have somewhere to be," I mutter hoping me saying something will get him to back off. I am almost back to the parking lot when I hear Roy break into a jog. The second I feel his hand on my shoulder I spin quickly and elbow him in the neck before kneeing him. I have the element of surprise on my side.
"Stay away from me." I spit angrily before running back to my car and locking myself inside. I take a few seconds to slow my breathing before starting my old Honda Civic. It takes me a few tries to put the keys in the ignition because I am shaking from adrenaline still coursing through me. I risk a glance in the direction I left the harassers, and thankfully they must have left. I take another breath before carefully pulling out of my spot and heading in the direction of the campsite.
I had dropped out of college a few weeks previously, because despite taking classes for just over two years now, I had no idea what to do, to major in, what job I wanted. The stress of not knowing was driving me crazy. I used to camp out here every summer through middle and high school with a friend and her parents, before we drifted apart. For the past few months this place has been sitting in the back of my mind, so with a lack of any other kind of direction, I decided to call up the owner and see when her soonest opening was. I thought maybe out in the middle of nowhere, with no lights and no noise, except for the crashing of waves on the beach, I might have some sort of epiphany. It was a long shot, but at this point, I'm kind of desperate for an epiphany.
After a driving down a steep and rocky road through the woods, I finally made it to the tiny one room wood cabin. I was tired, and didn't feel like unpacking, so I grabbed anything that needed to be refrigerated, and my pillows and blankets. After I lugged them all inside, I promptly passed out on the bed, not even using my blankets.
