AN: A very short one-shot inspired by the final moments of the episode of "Penelope." Being a big JJ fan, figured it would be fun to kind of write from her perspective on that one. The title will make sense at the end. It is unbeta'd, so all mistakes are my own. Thanks to zoni, she typed up a transcript of the episode for me long ago for another project, and I'm referencing it again. Feel free to read and review, tell me if you love it or hate it. *Disclaimer* I do not own Criminal Minds.
I'm sitting at my cluttered desk, flipping through a file and desperately trying to take my mind off things. My best friend was shot, the man that did it is still after her, and there seems to be no progress in stopping him.
The sound of the phone snaps me back to reality. I reach for it frantically, pressing it to my ear and hoping for good news. When Morgan urgently tells me to listen carefully, I know that "good" isn't the right choice of words. I hang up the phone as he finishes and move swiftly out of my office.
I draw my gun as I sneak toward the double doors of the BAU bullpen. Inside, Hotch and Rossi point their guns at Jason Clark Battle. I don't even know the man, yet I despise him. He is wearing his deputy uniform and he has a hostage. Bolton, the Internal Affairs guy that thought it was more important to investigate Penelope than it was to find the man who was trying to kill her. For a split second I wish that Bolton will get caught in the crossfire, but I force it out of my mind. He may have a family, and I should be focused on what I'm doing anyway.
I don't know exactly what to do. Battle has his back turned to me, so I have a shot, but I can't decide whether to take it or not. I pray that Hotch and Rossi don't tip him off with a look or something. And then it happens. He starts to turn, and I squeeze. I hear a loud crack and see the bullet burn into Battle, right between his eyes. The rest is a blur.
