Hatred (for the OTP Boot Camp)
Severus Snape hated everything about James Potter. He hated James' cocky attitude, how he thought that the world revolved around him. He hated that people liked James, and that he was a good Quidditch player. He hated that James was a spoiled rich brat. He even hated James' perpetually mused hair. Somehow, Severus Snape still found it in himself to hate James, even though hating a dead man is very unbecoming.
In fact, Snape hated James Potter so much so that there was only one person in the entirety of the world that he hated more. And it was himself.
"No!" he screamed, rising abruptly from the plush purple chair.
"I'm afraid it is so, Severus," Dumbledore said gravely, intertwining his fingers and lowering his head.
"She can't be dead. No," Snape almost pleaded, his eyes wild, as if searching for some hope to cling to.
"Severus. They are gone. Not even the darkest magic could truly bring them back. I'm sorry to be the bearer of such bad tidings, but I felt that you'd rather hear it from me than from Voldemort's followers." Dumbledore rose as Snape sunk back down. As the dark haired younger man collapsed into sobs, the headmaster exited his study silently.
"What have I done?!" Snape wailed to the empty room.
"No kidding, son," one of the old headmaster portraits retorted with a snort. "Caused the death of the woman you love? That's some pretty bad stuff."
Snape made no reply, but tears continued to toll down his sallow yellow cheeks. He was faced with a self-loathing unlike anything he had felt before. He let out a scream of pure anguish and pounded his fists against Dumbledore's solid oaken desk. He rose quickly, his eyes suddenly dry, and walked purposefully toward the west wall of the office. Yanking open a drawer, he deftly withdrew a sharp-looking metal object. He held it out in front of his chest. With Lily gone, Severus had nothing. What was his life without her? She was the only good thing that had ever happened to him, between his deadbeat father and his involvement in the dark arts. She was his sanity. Never again would the lily bloom. She had been the only light in his world of darkness. And now that light had been put out. He had as good as killed her. He hated himself with the fiery, burning passion with which he had once loved Lily. He plunged the metal into his heart just as the door was flung open.
"Severus!" Dumbledore called hoarsely. "No!" Then he was by the slumped, bleeding man's side. His wand was out and he began to mutter incantations.
"Stop. Albus. Stop," said Severus weakly. "Let me go. Please."
"Severus. Listen to me. Lily is gone, that's true. But her son is alive. Her son. He needs you. You can protect him," Dumbledore said. Snape gasped for breath as the headmaster gave a final flick of his wand. Snape sat up shakily.
"Why would I want to help Potter's brat?" he sneered. He clutched his side where his clothes had been soaked with crimson blood just a moment before.
"Because you loved her. And she loved him."
"I do love her," Severus replied, and he was washed over again with another wave of guilt and self-hate. He would help this baby boy, her son. But it would never change how much hate he felt for himself.
So, I decided to try a challenge where the participant writes 50 fics about their "one true pair" using a series of prompts. Obviously, my OTP is Snape/Lily. This was written for Gamma Orionis' OTP Challenge, using the prompt "hatred."
Please review, I'd love to know whether or not you liked it and what you guys think I could do better. I love my readers; you make my life awesome.
Yours truly, Zeus
