Note - Just finished the game yesterday. This is one of two poignant scenes that hit me while playing MGS4. The other being when Naomi examine Snake. Kinda sums up my feelings while playing the game. Its done from Otacon's POV since I kinda think he's one of the char more affected by Snake's current situation. Since they kinda went to hell and back together. salutes Oji-Snake

As the mission wore on it had became harder to hide the deterioration

As the mission wore on it had became harder to hide the deterioration. Here was a man who was suppose to be in his prime yet fate dealt him quite a bad hand near a very premature end. It wasn't as if they never try to find a cure. But there was no cure to be found. The foxdie attacks had become more frequent and devastating each time. Coupled with his increasing cellular degeneration. It was very much a lost cause. Somehow Otacon wonder if Foxdie might finish off Snake where Liquid failed to.

No. He shouldn't think of Snake that way. He had to have faith in him. Snake need not do this but yet he chose to, seeing that he had less to lose unlike the others. Sometimes Otacon wondered if Snake had too much confidence in himself. He suspected though, that Snake's stubbornness had inspired the others to be more determined and in return back him up where needed. It didn't matter what the others think about Snake's stubbornness to his own situation. He knew that he was the only one who could do this and do it right. The fate of the entire free world, it was too much burden for one dying man to handle.

Snake's nonchalance about his accelerated ageing, the snide remarks and self-deprecation was a merely face he put on to put his friends' concern at ease. But Otacon knew sometimes the snide remarks do get to Snake and it made the soldier want to prove himself just to recover that bit of ego. The more he tried to hide behind that stoic mien the more it hurts to watch him soldier on. There was no way he was going to let down his guard, not even for them.

How many people he cared about had passed away? Was it worth fighting for? What was all of them fighting for? The old soldier had accepted this mission knowing full well that he may not make it back alive. He was given more than enough chances to back down. And yet he never did. What was there to gain from backing down? Nothing.

The heat from the tunnel would have turn any sane man back. Without so much as a second thought, Snake had step through the door. Otacon whimpered at what the Mark III had sent back. The sound and sight of the Octocamo burning away. The Solid Eye exploded soon after.

He almost panic when Snake fell. Had he succumbed? His heart was beating away rapidly fearing for the worse. And then there was a little motion from Snake and the soldier started to crawl towards the end of the tunnel.

"You can do it Snake!" Otacon choked back his emotions to encourage his friend onwards.

Seeing Snake drag himself through that Microwave Tunnel made. Caught between wanting his friend to succeed and yet wanting to find another easier way to do this. But there was none. There was nothing more he could do beyond encouraging the prematurely old soldier onwards.

"Just a little further Snake!!" Otacon cried through the codec and the Mark III. A lump forms in his throat and he does not know if Snake even hears the words of encouragement. He wished he could be there but then he would be useless as well as a burden.

Relief soon flush over him and Otacon started to breath again as Snake reaches the end of the tunnel. Opening the doors for him, the old soldier stumbled through the doors and into the server room. Otacon had to work quick as he synchs the Mark III into the main server. He had to ignore the sound of gunfire as Snake fought of a horde of Scarabs. He pray had enough time to upload the worm otherwise Snake's efforts would have all being in vain.
