Those Words

The hologram flickered away just as he was about to say those words. Those words. The words he had never been able to tell her. Those words were the only way he could describe how he felt. Now they would never be released. A single tear slid down the side of his cheek. He hadn't cried since the war, a long time ago. Another came, then another. He sucked in his breath and tried to compose himself. He flicked a couple of switches, pushed a few buttons, and cranked the lever. He felt the ground shake in sympathy. Why are you trying to move on so fast?, she asked. He knew she loved her too. She was the only one who truly appreciated her and even talked to her. She hummed quietly in sadness. He said nothing to answer her question and gently patted her console. He sat down in his chair- the left one- and stared at the floor. He sat and stared. He didn't know how long. He thought of her; her hair, her eyes, her smile. He knew he could never love anyone else as much as her. She was gone. Forever. He could not rescue her. The Shadow Proclamation had given him some slack since he was so important, but if he ever tried burning up the sun one more time, he would be in a lot of trouble. There were so many places he wanted to take her: Barcelona, Apalapalacia, Raxacoricofallapatorius, he could go on forever. It's probably for the best, he thought. She would still have her dangers, but not to the level if she was still with him. He knew Jackie, Mickey, and Pete would take care of her, but she knew he is all she ever wanted. He knew he would never see her again, and he just couldn't live with that. All he ever wanted to say to her were those words. Those words he waited to long to say. Now she will never hear them from him. If only the temporal stimulator stayed open for another 10 seconds, he thought. He came out of his haze and saw he had somehow managed to walk into one of the hallways and into Corridor 6. Not Corridor 6, he thought, I can't stand it. His mind told him no but his legs kept on moving. He passed a couple of rooms and thought of who all had slept there. Sarah Jane, Jack, Mickey... the Master. His feet stopped outside of the door at the end of the hallway. As he thought of who slept here, his heart started to ache. He slowly stepped up to the door and laid his hand on the doorknob, barely touching it. Images of her flashed through his mind and he felt something rise up in his chest. He missed her so much and it had only been an hour. He wanted this to be a mightmare and wake up to her bounding away, eager to explore. He wanted to hold her hand again and hear her beautiful laugh. He looked down at his hand on the doorknob. He hadn't dared turn it. It's her room, he told himself. What does it matter? She's gone, he thought. He took a long shaky breath and opened the door. He stood there, frozen. The mass of grief and heart break he had been holding in broke through. Between sobs, to no one, he said those words.

"I love you."
