A Smile's Worth
Aang sighed and set his letter aside, not bothering to read it. He knew what it was- another so-called emergency meeting. Not only did he despise these meetings of pointless arguments, but also he had promised Katara and the kids that he would be home all day.
He pushed himself up wearily from his chair, making his way to the door before running into a pair of beautiful cerulean eyes- exact replicas of his wife's.
"Hey, Daddy!"
He grinned widely. "Hey, Princess!"
The proud Avatar bent down to pick up Kya. Having his daughter in his protective arms was something he always found himself doing even if he was late for a meeting. It was the only thing in the world that lifted his spirits so effortlessly. "What does my darling daughter have in mind today?"
"Daddy, I was wondering if we can do the Phoenix Flight dance like we always do." Kya said with a huge hopeful smile on her face.
The Avatar's happy smile fell. "Now?"
"Yeah. Bumi and Tenzin are eating peaches in the garden again, and I'm bored from playing with my dolls all the time."
Aang placed her on the chair, holding her by the shoulders. "Honey, I'm so sorry. I have to go to a meeting."
Her smile vanished. "Oh…"
"I tell you what. I'll be back as soon as possible and we can spend the rest of the day doing whatever you want. Okay?"
Kya smiled sadly as her father gave her a quick hug before hurrying outside. The dejected waterbender ambled into her playroom but was surprised to see her gigantic stuffed polar bear seated on the floor when she returned a few minutes later.
"How did you get here, Mr. Snuggles?" she asked.
Suddenly, she saw the toy starting to shift and stand up. The toddler watched with wide eyes as the bear looked at her expectantly, squatting and beckoning her to get on its back. She then noticed tattooed hands trying to hide themselves under the lacy fluff. A mischievous smile painted itself across her lips.
Within moments, squeals and squirms of laughter echoed to the kitchen, catching Katara's attention. When she took a peak at her daughter in the hallway, she was greeted with flailing arms and her husband's goofy smile in the midst of squats and kicks as the duo ran around in circles. The master waterbender laughed at the sight of the father and daughter conducting the exotic Fire Nation dance.
"What happened to the meeting?" Katara asked the beaming father afterwards.
"I thought it could wait." He smiled as he watched Kya engulfed in laughter. "Nothing is worth more than her smile."
