/Beep…Beep…Beep…/ That was all I heard when I slowly gained conscience My eyes fluttered open with difficulty.
Everything ached. From my head down to my toes. Stiff and painful. With a silent groan, I shifted around in my bed, not fully realizing where I was.
/Beep…Beep…Beep…/ the annoying sound continued* "For goodness' sake!", I exclaimed in a croaky voice.
With half-closed eyes, I reach out to where that stupid clock alarm should have been.
Confusion appeared on my features as my fingertips slid along a cold smooth surface.
"What the- ", I frowned, fully opening my eyes. My cheeks turned pale as I suddenly had to take in my surroundings.
Hospital.. Why was I in a hospital? My arm dropped back onto my bed. My heart beating wildly, causing those annoying beeps to quicken their rate as well.
There was sudden movement on my left.. Two shadows of two men whom I loved dearly. Jeremy & Matt.
Within a second, they were standing next to me. Matt's crystal blue eyes piercing into mine, Jeremy's hand clutching mine as if I were his lifeline.
With parted lips, I stared at them, the confusion turning into angst. "Wh- ? ", my voice wouldn't co-operate and scraping my voice only resulted in having a coughing fit. Two pairs of eyes watched my every single little move once I stopped coughing.
Their eyes were filled with so many emotions. Relief, concern, sadness, grief.
"Will someone please tell me what's going on?" I demanded, my voice shaking. I couldn't remember how I got here.
I couldn't remember what happened. The last thing I remembered was …. The last thing I could remember was.. were.. Dad's eyes locking with mine.
"Jer" I questioned, the two teenagers standing at my side were awfully quiet. "Jer.. Will you get mom and dad? I think Matt's lost his tongue or something", I said in a gently, slightly teasing tone.
Of course my parents would be alright. There was no other way. Jeremy didn't move though, he emitted a strange strangled sound before looking at Matt as if trying to get a message across. I could see Matt nodding followed by Jeremy leaving the room without a single word.
"Elena", Matt finally started, his hands capturing mine as he took a seat on the edge of my bed.
"Elena, you've been in a car accident. Your father lost control of the car on the Wickery Bridge, it crashed into the water.. The rescue workers did everything they could.", Matt's voice turned slightly hoarse, he had to steady himself with a deep inhale of air.
"They did everything they could but…" No. No. No. No. Realization slowly dawned on me, shaking my head furiously while tears were welling up in the corners of my eyes
"No.. They're…?" Not able to finish my sentence, I glanced up at Matt who surprisingly was tearing up as well.
My fingers dug in the cotton hospital sheets "Lena, it was too late.. ", Matt murmured, his hand squeezing mine. Sobs escaped my lips, the room filling with my own sounds of agony and loss.
"Leave." I choked out, pulling my hand away from Matt. He shook his head. "Leave!" I said slightly louder, turning on my side, my body leaving he did eventually..
"George Eliot once wrote: 'There is no despair so absolute as that which comes with the first moments of our first great sorrow, when we have not yet known what it is to have suffered and healed, to have despaired and have recovered hope.
